Golders Green followed up their fine win at Sutton by an equally good display against Finchley, in the 2nd round of the Middlesex Charity Cup at Summers Lane last Saturday. The pitch was a sea of mud, and with the very strong cross wind football was very difficult, and extra time was a severe test of endurance.

With Lovell still injured and Fair not arriving, the Green were fortunate in having Avis turn up unexpectedly from Germany to play inside left. The visitors overcame the conditions admirably, every man pulling his weight.

Both sides missed chances, and the interval came with a blank score sheet.

Then, after half an hour [of the second half], Stroud gave to Marrable, and from his pass GRIFFITHS put a splendid shot past Desborough, who, soon after, saved well from Marrable. Magnificent defensive work by King, who headed away three times, cleared the danger, but King had to leave the field for attention.

Time was almost up, and the spectators were beginning to melt away ; the referee was looking at his watch ; suddenly Popperwell got the ball, brat Bossoms and centred perfectly for PAYNTER to head home the equaliser ; as the ball was [re-]centred, the whistle went for full time.

Kicking up the slope in the first period of extra time, the Green began to get on top. Just before the change of ends, MARRABLE received the ball well out and put in a long dropping shot, which completely deceived Desborough and fell, over his head, into the net, to give the Green the lead again.

In the final period King went to outside right, Stroud moved to inside right, Topp to centre half and Marrable to right half. Then King got away on the right and passed to GRIFFITHS, who coolly kicked past Desborough into the net to make the score 3-1.

A free kick to the Green just outside the penalty area was well cleared by Desborough, who soon afterwards saved from Avis. Five minutes from the end, Roberts quite unnecessarily conceded a free kick to Finchley in a duel with Paynter, and from the centre PAYNTER headed home to reduce Finchley's arrears. The Green, by their win, enter the semi-final of the competition.
