Golders Green met Sutton United last Saturday at Claremont Road in the postponed first round tie of the London Senior Cup, the game ending in a goalless draw.

The performance must be considered satisfactory, as the Green were below strength : Pat Lynch was down with 'flu, and Roy Stroud was on Army duty. King moved from centre half to right back, and played a fine defensive game there, his strong first-time clearances being a feature, while Lovell dropped back to his pre-war position of centre half, where he gave a great display. Two Reserves - Hicks at outside right and Marrable at inside right - came into the forward line, and put up a good show.

The pitch, after a long period of heavy rain, was very sticky, and a number of attacks on both sides petered out through ball or player sticking in the mud. Territorially, the Green had by far the better of the exchanges, but they dallied and would rarely try a shot. Sutton's attack appeared the more forceful, but the home defence was very sound.

Roberts was soon called into action by Scott, before the Green took up the attack, and had several chances, but they would persist in passing when well-placed instead of having a shot at goal.

After 35 minutes' play, Griffiths got right through, but with only Carr to beat he seemed to get stuck in the mud and his shot went wide. A short Sutton rally, in which Lovell brilliantly cleared a dangerous situation, was followed by two corners to the Green. Then Cochrane, Griffiths, Marrable and Hicks all had chances to shoot, but preferred to pass instead.

After the interval, Carr only just cleared from Cochrane, following a free kick, and then Roberts fell on the ball to stop Vaughan when he appeared right through. Sutton missed a great chance when, with Roberts out of goal, Crisp lifted the ball over the bar, but soon afterwards the Green's goalie dealt well with a shot from the same attacker.

The game swung evenly for a period, but in the later stages the Green again asserted themselves ; one quick passing movement between A. Williams, Griffiths and Marrable saw Hicks just too far back to tap the ball home. Two free kicks to the Green followed, and then Carr saved from F. Williams, who played a strong game throughout.

A few minutes before the end, Sutton attacked and Roberts was called upon to save a stinging shot ; he failed to hold the ball, but fortunately for the Green, the danger was averted at the expense of a corner, which was sent behind.

The Green's defence as a whole played well, with King, Lovell and Topp taking chief honours, but the attack lacked the necessary punch and forethought to open up the strong visiting defence. In the Sutton side, Vaughan and Bryant were two fine forwards, while Shepherd at left back was a strong defender.
