Golders Green's interest in the F.A. Amateur Cup this season ended last Saturday, at Claremont Road, they were defeated 3-1 by Leyton.

The visitors gave a fine, workmanlike display ; their defence was sound even when, during the first 20 minutes, it was subjected to considerable pressure ; the backs kicked a good length, accurate ball and the attack moved with purpose and precision by means of crisp, first-time, well-directed passes.

In contrast, the Green appeared to be worried by the sticky going and heavy ball. With the exception of King, who played an outstanding game throughout, there appeared to be no one to kick a ball hard and true, while there was too much close play and "fiddling" in view of the conditions. Neither winger received good service of the ball, while the inside forwards were unable to engineer any openings. While Leyton moved to meet a ball, the Green were waiting for it to come to them.

Leyton well deserved their win, but it was not achieved without a hard struggle. For the first 20 minutes the Green called the tune and were unlucky not to have scored. After 29 minutes' play, however, and rather against the run of the game, Boatwright got away and passed to LIMMER, who hooked the ball over from an acute angle over Roberts into the far end of the goal.

Within three minutes, and before the Green had recovered from the shock, Leyton had scored again. Boatwright again engineered the opening, and sent the ball across for HOCKADAY to shoot home.

Just before the interval, Griffiths put a good ball out towards the left, but Gibbs cleared before Cochrane could reach it.

The second half opened with strong Leyton attacks, several corners being forced. A free kick to the Green set their vanguard on the go, but Cochrane hooked the ball behind with Gibbs out. Soon afterwards, Gibbs had to clear a hot shot from Lovell.

Roberts, slipping on the muddy ground, was unable to gather a pass back by King, and the ball went for a corner, which was followed by a second. Then after 12 minutes' play, Pine got through and passed in for PAGE to put Leyton three up.

After 24 minutes, Bossoms cleared a ball up the field, and GRIFFITHS got through to beat Gibbs and reduce the Green's arrears.

Several promising Green attacks petered out because they were neither fast nor accurate enough to break down the strong Leyton defence.
