Match Report

Past players for Golders Green F.C. were made welcome by the present side at the Claremont Road ground on Wednesday evening. The officials were also past players. T.E. Evans, the referee, played for the club four years ago, but owing to an injury he had to leave the game altogether. The linesmen, Leslie Compton and Jimmy Shorland, were both keen players, the former now having achieved fame as an Arsenal man, and the latter having joined forces with a Mill Hill club.

Familiar names were seen in the whole composition of the Golders Green Past team, who were:-
S.R. Smith; F.H. Dean, J.W. Richardson; W.C. Little, P.A. Rees, F.R. Johnson; D.G.Short, J.G. Spalton, F.P. Evans, W.H. Butland, S.J. Moore.
V. Rowe turned out at half-time in place of Short.
Golders Green Present team were :-
S.A. Barlow; W. Noot, T. Caswell; G. Bucci, B. Weaver, F. Davis; A.J. Breagan, J. Hill, D.C. Walker, G. Marrable, F.S. Boston.

The Past team won the toss and elected to play away from the Pavilion, giving the Present team the kick-off. Play was fast and clean, both sides playing neat football, passing well and making good attack and defensive moves.

Right at the start the Golders Green Present almost succeeded in scoring, but Smith caught the ball and sent it away to the centre, where Butland was waiting to take it away. He passed it over to his right wing, but Short was not able to centre again.

First blood went to the old timers, however, and it was easy to see how experience told over the younger men. SPALTON scored after receiving a pass from Rees about midfield. He ran away with the ball and beat Davis and Caswell, leaving only Barlow to guard the goal. He made a beautiful shot and fully deserved his score.

There was no other score in the first half, but on several occasions Golders Green Present were in a position to net and shot wildly. Dave Walker made a fine run through until he encountered Richardson and lost the ball. Richardson was not able to clear it, however, and Marrable almost scored, but Dean and Smith were able to cope with him.

Dean received a knee injury in one of the Present team attacks, and had to leave the field until half-time; his place was taken by Shorland. The best players in the Past team were Spalton, Rees, Evans and Butland, while Smith put up a very good show in goal.

At half-time the strain began to tell slightly on the Past team, and when play recommenced they did not look too happy.

The present team drew level with an excellent shot from BOSTON, who joined well in a good attacking move by Breagan, Hill and Walker.

It was some time after this that another goal came. Then BUCCI broke through and had Smith guessing.

The third was scored by BOSTON, who received a beautiful long pass from Breagan. WALKER added another goal to the total after some very good play, avoiding, as he ran through the field, Rees, Dean, Little and Richardson, and finally taking plenty of time for a straight punt into goal.

After this the old-timers began to recover their agility and made several unfruitful attacks on the Present goal, but before they could score again two more points were added to the total against them. BOSTON received the ball from Weaver, who had marked Evans well throuout the game, and he was away with it, almost fighting with Johnson and Rees before he got through to shoot. As he did so the ball struck Dean, but went in the net.

WALKER would have scored a sixth goal before he did if he had not handled the ball on receiving a pass, for he had a clean run through and netted the ball. He scored a few moments later, however, from a good centre by Breagan, off a pass from Bucci.

The last goal of the match was scored by BUTLAND after several valiant attempts, and brought the score to : Past team 2 ; Present team 6.

The match was in aid of the club's Ground Improvement (Stand Extension) Fund.
