Though Golders Green were defeated by 4-0 at Wealdstone, they did well to hold Wealdstone to a lead of 2-0 at half-time, and the final score suggests an easier victory than Wealdstone actually experienced.
Man for man the Wealdstone team were certainly more clever, there was team work and an understanding between the halves and the forwards far superior to that displayed by Golders Green and the Wealdstone men went for the ball better and passed with uncanny accuracy. Yet Golders Green - apart from a few definately off periods, played a good game against a better side and it must be realised that they were handicapped by injury - particularly to Marsden, who was a passenger for the greater part of the match.
The Golders Green forwards were not playing well together as a line, Bucci, at right-half, was not in good form and Breagan was helpless without a partner after Marsden had been crocked. Lambie and Walker worked hard but could not beat the defence, and little was seen of the true Boston on the left wing.
The hero of the game, as far as Golders Green were concerned, was Graves, at centre-half, without whom, at times, Barlow would hav e been badly over-worked. Caswell played a fairly steady game, but Pidgeon was not strong enough. Davis tried to put some method into his game and showed flashes of brilliance.
Mardsen's inclusion at inside-right was owing to the absence of Sexton, and there was one change, also, in the Wealdstone team, Morriss taking the place of C.E. Bunce at centre-forward,
Golders Green started one man short, Bucci turning out a few minutes late. Davis pushed a useful pass forward to Lambie, but he was robbed by Friday and, upon Graves feeding the front line again a centre by Breagan led only to a goal-kick, from which Wealdstone got away on the left wing. Potts shot across the goal and a shot from Morriss went wide.
Wealdstone came again, but Caswell cleared and near midfield Golder Green were awarded a free kick, but gained nothing by it. Davis started a promising movement and Breagan made ground before swinging the ball across to the left, but Friday and Loveday were too smart for Walker and Boston. Davis secured possession again and tried to shoot through the defence, but Friday took up the ball and put Wealdstone's right wing on the move, a corner resulting.
The game was ten minutes old when POTTS opened the scoring with a fine low shot through to the back of the net.
The game was being played at a fast pace and both goalies came into action from time to time, but Golders Green showed no signs of equalising. Wealdstone were swinging the ball about and showing keen opportunism, and it was not surprising when DYKE, well placed in front of goal, gave Wealdstone their second.
For the rest of the first half Golders Green held Wealdstone in spite of strenuous efforts to increase the score, but the Green's goal had one or two lucky escapes. Barlow held a grand shot from Wilson and did well to save a low drive from Morriss. At the other end Lambie showed a welcome burst of speed and initiative, beating Friday and Showler and passing out to Breagan when tackled by Loveday. Breagan headed almost to the goalmouth, but Ellis cleared.
Marsden had a good scoring chance from one of Breagan's centres, but he was having trouble with his leg, and shot wide when the goalie was out of position.
Walker was fouled just outside the penalty area. Boston took the kick and placed the ball well, but Ellis headed clear and the pressure ended with Boston having a shot saved by Lewis.
Golders Green were hard pressed for a time, but close on half-time they came forwards again and forced a corner following a free-kick taken by Bucci.
Shortly before the interval Breagan moved inside and the injured Marsden went out on the wing.
Immediately after the change of ends, a glorious opportunity was missed when Marsden passed out to Breagan instead of taking a shot at close range. Caswell then came up to take a shot, but was wide of the mark and a long drive by Boston was safely dealt with by Lewis.
Ellis relieved the pressure and Wealdstone advanced down the centre, Graves causing a minor sensation by the way he stopped the attack single-handed. Boston and Walker brought a ray of hope to the visiting supporters when they sped down the wing together and Boston sent in one of his typical shots, but Lewis held it and also cleared another from the same source.
A movement started by Dyke nearly led to Wealdstone's third goal, Graves miskicking and letting Morriss through, but Barlow reached the ball.
MORRISS netted the third, Brown putting the ball through to him with only the goalie to beat, and the fourth was a penalty goal, awarded for an infringement by Pidgeon against Ellis. ELLIS took the kick and made no mistake with it.
At the close of the match the cup was presented to Wealdstone by Sir isidore Salmon, M.P. for Harrow, S. Friday accepting the trophy on behalf of his team.
Sir Isidore Salmon was introduced by County Secretary Mr. W.H. Hird, and was thanked by Mr. C.E. Brady, president and chairman of the Wealdstone club.
