Saturday's defeat by Leyton was Golders Green's first loss for eight weeks, and it was due to the home halves not being quick enough to smother the visitors' passes and shots and to the fine display of the Leyton halves, particularly Preston, in the centre.
W. Boston returned to the Golders Green team at right back, and F. Boston was fit again to turn out on the left wing. Webster came in at inside-left, Bucci dropping to right-half, while Weaver deputised for Peverell at centre-half. Barlow gave a good display in goal, holding some difficult shots when the Leyton pressure was at its height.
Snazel, late of Golders Green, was among the Leyton scorers.
Golders Green faced the strong wind in the first half, and Leyton made early raids on the left wing. W. Boston stopped Cameron, but Holder returned the ball to the forwards, and Barnes tried to centre to Evans, but the pass went astray. Davis sent the Golders Green forwards away, and Webster worked well to put F. Boston on the move, but Harden beat the winger and passed forward to Evans. Weaver had him marked, and when Evans winged the ball W. Boston upset Cameron. Golders Green attacked, but faulty passing by Sexton brought this to an end and play was carried again to the Golders Green area, Barlow saving a shot from Evans.
Davis, who was giving a good display, was injured at this stage, but was soon fit again.
A free kick for Golders Green failed, and Barnes partnered Evans in an attempt to break through in the centre, but Caswell cleared. Soon afterwards Barlow held from Smith, and Barnes shot over the bar.
Davis was doing a lot of good work, from which F. Boston was able to make ground, and the latter was going well when a defender handled near the penalty area. Boston took the kick and drove hard to the centre of the goal, shoulder high, but Newton brought off a grand save.
Then Breagan was fouled, and his kick was well placed to Webster, who headed accurately, but Newton cleared.
The Golders Green half-backs were definitely not at their best, and their weakness led to one dangerous struggle around the home goal, which ended with a corner and a shot over the top by Cameron. Snazel also headed too high after taking up a pass from Cameron.
Golders Green were too slow in getting at the men, and the Leyton halves and forwards were allowed time to plan their work.
When Golders Green pressed again Newton had to concede a corner, but this led to no result. Davis was injured again and had to leave the field for attention, but he returned before the interval.
Golders Green opened the scoring through SEXTON, who turned a centre from Breagan to good account with a fine first-timer.
Close on half-time Snazel broke clean away, but his shot went wide.
Leyton set the pace after the change of ends, and Barlow was soon in action. In dealing with a shot from Cameron he dropped the ball almost on the line, but picked up and cleared in time. W. Boston put Golders Green on the move again, and Webster sent out a lovely pass to F. Boston, who returned a grand shot, the ball skimming along the top of the crossbar.
BARNES equalised for Leyton after Smith had forced a corner. Cameron nearly gave them the lead when he was left unmarked, and W. Boston headed clear from Smith.
At the other end Breagan was brought down and injured when going well. Twice Sexton was too slow to take advantage of good work by Bucci. Then Davis sent the left wing away, but only a corner resulted.
WALKER gave Golders Green the lead again, but this was not held for long. Leyton replied with a hot attack and, after Barlow had punched the ball out twice, SNAZEL put Leyton on level terms for the second time.
Bucci came near to scoring with a long shot, and Webster, taking a corner kick, placed the ball beautifully right to the goalmouth, but Newton saved while falling. F. Boston also reached Newton, but could not beat him.
BARNES gave Leyton their third goal, and after Golders Green had forced three unproductive corners, making a desperate effort to draw level, EVANS put the issue beyond doubt, scoring Leyton's fourth after a corner.
