Match Report

When Golders Green met Hayes in the Athenian League at Hayes on Good Friday, A.S. Peverell was unable to play at centre-half, and G. Bucci took his place, while E. Sandrock was brought in at right-half.

Hayes kicked off and drove Golders Green back to their own goal-line. R. Thomas shot after the ball had been passed right across the centre from the right wing, but Barlow saved neatly.

Play was not very fast, but Hayes were tricky. The first goal was scored by THOMAS, the inside-left, within five minutes of the start.

A return of the offensive to Golders Green gave the ball to Marcantonio, who ran neatly down the field and centred, but Webster was not able to jump to the ball and head it in, with the result that Holding caught it and cleared.

Golders Green defence seemed to lack the necessary co-ordination to hold the Hayes forwards in check. A free kick to Golders Green, taken by Davis, almost resulted in a goal, but the Hayes goalkeeper cleared, and the result was a further attack on the Green's goal.

Another free kick was awarded, this time to Hayes, and Barlow had an unpleasant few moments before the ball went out for a goal-kick. Hayes pressed hard and succeeded in forcing a corner, from which FRIDAY scored Hayes' second goal.

When the ball reached the forward line Breagan played a neat game, but the home team did most of the attacking.

Dave Walker made a brave try for goal on one occasion, when the ball was passed full down the centre. Jones was in front of him, however, and Holding was able to pick the ball up before Walker could get to it.

Hayes were showing an infinitely better mastery of the light ball and were at an advantage with greater height and weight. The Greens, however, were marking poorly and displayed little inclination to follow up a tac kle. Lack of position in the field also contributed to the poor display they were putting up in the first half. Sexton was on the left wing on several occasions when his presence at inside-right would have been useful.

THOMAS scored Hayes' third goal after Chudley and Friday had both tried and failed. Barlow was unable to clear and W. Boston, also in the goalmouth, did his best to kick the ball away, but failed. A few minutes later the same player (THOMAS) again scored from a clear run down the field.

Barlow had plenty of hard work to do, and made some excellent recoveries, but the defence were mainly unable to team up to cope with the Hayes attack.

At half-time Golders Green were four goals down.

Almost immediately after play re-opened a free kick was awarded against the Greens. It was taken by Ward, the right-back, and skimmed straight along the ground for goal. Barlow was on the spot, however, and saved cleanly.

Shortly after this Walker made a good breakaway, but instead of following through shot too early and gave Holding an easy job to save.

A fine attack by Hayes brought their forwards to the Golders Green goal and Chudley put in a good shot, which was saved by Barlow. FRIDAY received the ball, however, and was free to net it as he pleased, scoring Hayes' fifth point.

A little of Golders Green's looseness of play had now communicated itself to the Hayes' team and they had some difficulty in the second half in finding their passes. This enabled the visitors to break away on one or two occasions.

What should have been Hayes' sixth goal came from a shot by Reeves after some close play in front of the Green's goal. It was disallowed, however, because Hunter was offside.

Of the Hayes' team, the outstanding players were Friday and Thomas in the foward line, and Ward and Jones, the backs, while Caswell, Boston, Bucci, Breagan and particularly Barlow were individually good for Golders Green.

A casualty was attendant upon Hayes' sixth goal, scored by THOMAS. Friday, who went to head the ball, received a blow on the jaw which necessitated his leaving the field for a few moments.

The nearest Golders Green came to scoring was after a mix-up in front of the visitors' goal. Bucci cleared, giving Breagan and Sexton a run up the field, but this ended in a goal-kick for Hayes.

Hayes continued this attack with interest and Barlow came out to save and Thomas came a cropper over him. Three defenders held the goalmouth, preventing Hayes from scoring, and eventually the ball went over the line. TGwo St. John Ambulance men attended to Thomas and he left the field, not returning.

In the second half Bucci played in his usual position and Sandrock moved to centre-half, and both played a bedtter game, Friday being well stopped. The Hayes' team showed a faster turn of speed, however, during the whole of the game, and upheld their reputation of being one of the fastest teams in the Athenian League.
