Match Report

The difference between the Isthmian and Athenian Leagues was clearly shown at Claremont Road on Wednesday evening, when The Casuals paid a return visit to contest their right to hold the [Will] Mather Cup, and beat Golders Green by 2-0. The cup, presented by Mr. Will Mather, is awarded every year to the winners of a match in aid of the Manor House Hospital, and The Casuals gave their support by including in their strong eleven a number of internationals and Maurice Edelston, of Brentford.

The Casuals were the better team, but a spirited second half rally in which Golders Green hardly left The Casuals' goalmouth must, in most matches, have given them a brace of goals. Golders Green were unlucky not to score, but the more polished team won, so justice was done.

Starting off with a burst, The Casuals dictated the run of the play and scored a goal through LEE, but towards the end of the half Golders Green showed signs of the great revival which they were to stage later, and began to take a much bigger share of the play. Their hopes were dashed three minutes before half-time, when The Casuals scored a deserved but lucky goal. Lee put in a good shot which would have sent the ball over the crossbar had it not caught GRAVES and been deflected into the net.

Within an ace of scoring on numerous occasions, striking all three posts [sic] with the ball, the Golders Green forwards tried gloriously hard to gain the mastery and that they failed was no disgrace.

The Casuals won because they covered their men, found each other with good passes and were not afraid to shoot as often as they could. Their goalkeeper deserved the special applause he was accorded, for he played a splendid game, and was worth two men.

Barlow could have followed his example, in running out, to save the first goal, but later Barlow made a number of good saves. Starting shakily, Graves soon became the most valuable player for Golders Green and his soundness as centre-half broke up The Casuals' five-forwards' attack time after time. For the last 15 minutes he went among the forwards and gave a fresh enthusiasm to the bombardments on The Casuals' goal.

The Bostons did as well as they always do and Thomas was a lively inside man, coming near to a score on three occasions, but several times he spoilt good movements by a weak pass. That was a fault of most of the Green players, and half the time they were giving the ball away instead of slowing down and allowing more time for a decision.

Breagan was so dangerous in the second half that often two men were covering him as he went along the wing, with another lying in attendance should the two be beaten!

In the half-back line, Golders Green were not at their usual strength. Besides George Bucci, Lovell was not fit, and his place was taken by H.W. Robson.

Douglas Short, a former Golders Green player, gave his services as referee.

At the conclusion of the game, the cup was presented to the captain of the winning team, and Mr. Gordon Raymond, president of the Golders Green club, thanked The Casuals for their sporting spirit.
