Prior to Saturday's Middlesex Senior Cup match at Golders Green, it was considered that Hoxton Manor had at least a slender hope of winning the competition. But they waived the choice of ground and thus gave Golders Green the advantage. Even so, the visitors might have won or drawn, but, after holding out for almost an hour, they weakened and Golders Green had a comparatively easy task in piling up the goals.
Golders Green did not show particularly good form. In the early stages the wings were not made sufficient use of near goal ; then F. Boston proved ineffective when he was being served over-well to the exclusion of Breagan, on the right. Thomas could have shown more power in the centre, and if the backs had positioned themselves better Graves could have left his post as policeman more often to support the attack.
The home team showed a few changes from the side which lost at Sutton. Graves was back at centre-half, and Ellison and Bucci were both fit again, the former returning at inside-right and the latter at left-half.
[Here there is a small gap which makes the next five lines of the report mostly guesswork, so they have been omitted.]
Graves won the toss. Hoxton were robbed at kick-off and Breagan made ground with the ball, turning in a useful centre, but Thomas failed to keep on his feet and Raffaelli cleared to the left wing, but W. Boston stopped Stacey and passed up to Lovell, who got the ball through to Owen. He beat two defenders and served F. Boston, but the pass went too far forward and Boston shot behind the net.
Hoxton gained ground by a series of throw-ins, during which Golders Green invited trouble by failing to mark their men, but a free-kick taken by W. Boston for a foul on Breagan brought Golders Green to the visitors' area again and Thomas tried well for a goal, turning round a pass from Ellison.
Golders Green were pressing for a considerable spell - except for one raid led by the Hoxton right wing and broken up by Graves - but the nearest the Green came to success was a shot over the top by Thomas from one of Boston's centres.
When the visitors next attacked, Graves found himself hard-pressed by Bettrame and Manze and had to pass back to Barlow, from whose clearance kick Ellison pushed the ball through to Thomas. He was cut off by Ball, but passed to F. Boston, who sent in a grand shot which Coleman held.
Weakness now developed in the Green's half-line, but Hoxton failed to take full advantage of it and lost a glorious chance to lead when Bettrame got away and centred perfectly, only to see Stacey miss an absolute " sitter."
Golders Green replied with a nice movement started by Lovell, and good play by Breagan ended with a shot by Boston to the foot of the upright.
Golders Green should have been one-up in the first 20 minutes, and would certainly have established a sound lead by the interval if there had been better distribution of the ball. There was too much reliance on the left wing, when Breagan could have shown results; and alternatively the halves kept pushing the ball up to Thomas, using the wingers only in midfield. There was also a lack of quick shooting when the goal area was reached. Once Golders Green were all round the Manor goal, but no one was smart enough with a first-timer until Bucci came up to have a go. He reached Coleman, but the shot was safely dealt with.
At the other end Barlow was tested by a stinger from Stacey, but he saved well, and soon afterwards Stacey broke away again but struck the side of the net.
From a corner taken by Breagan, Ellison turned the ball to the Hoxton goal, but Coleman held it and a nice try failed. Boston forced another corner when he shot across the goalmouth, but this led to nothing and the score sheet was blank when the whistle went for half-time just as Boston was preparing to take a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area for a foul on Bucci.
Golders Green had had more than half the play in the first half, but Hoxton looked like holding out, until, ten minutes from the restart, Bucci opened the scoring. He had passed to F. Boston, who returned a centre and BUCCI shot through to net a beauty.
From this moment the visitors proved easier game for Golders Green, and ELLISON soon scored the second goal, converting a well-placed centre from Breagan, who had a long pass across from F. Boston.
This was followed by a corner for the Greens, but from Breagan's kick F. Boston drove high over the bar. A third goal nearly came when Thomas shot from Boston's centre while Coleman was out of position, but Attlee headed away.
Then came the penalty which gave Golders Green their third. It was for a foul on Thomas, and W. BOSTON took the spot-kick, slamming the ball well past the goalkeeper to the back of the net.
Hoxton were by now out of the picture altogether, and F. BOSTON completed the scoring when he trapped the ball from the right wing and drove it low through the posts.
