Match Report

The feature of Golders Green's League match with Wealdstone was the remarkable display of Owen, at outside-left. Fast and tricky, making up by intelligent tactics for what he lacked in size and weight, he led the Wealdstone defence a rare dance at times, and his one goal - a beautiful effort - was not all he deserved.

Bucci played a sterling game throughout, and the other wing-half, Lovell, was in good form, but the disappointment was Caswell, at left-back, who gave the Wealdstone right wing far too much rope. The new back from Norway, B. Berger, was down to play, but he was called away for family reasons. The Green as a whole played a good game and stuck the pace well, though Wealdstone outshone them in accuracy of passing and in positional play. Breagan could not make his great headway against Ellis.

There was one last-minute change in the visitors' side, R. Bidewell coming in at centre-half in place of S. Friday.

Golders Green opened the scoring with a perfect goal. Almost at once Wealdstone equalised, but the Greens led again before the interval and should have had a third if Ellison had not been brought down in the penalty area. After the change-over Wealdstone equalised again. Once more Golders Green got on top, but in the closing minutes the visitors levelled the scores for the third time.

Almost from the kick-off Gaze broke away, getting well past Graves, but Boston met his centre and got the ball up to Owen. He was robbed by Bidewell, and Gaze came back for another raid, profiting through a miskick by Evans. He failed again, but bunching by the Golders Green defence let the visitors' outside wing through, and a well-placed centre found Bunce, but his shot was held by Barlow. From the goal kick Golders Green attacked on the left and Owen turned in a lovely centre, but Loveday cleared it. Bucci pushed the ball through to give Owen another run, but Thomas could not use his centre.

Ellison was injured and had to leave the field, but soon returned.

Again Bucci got Owen away, and he forced a corner, but the kick was not well placed.

At the other end Schofield tried a long shot, but Barlow could deal with these. Bunce, taking up a pass from Green, looked a scorer, but Caswell upset him and Golders Green attacked again, Thomas finishing off with a long shot, which just skimmed the crossbar.

At this stage Bucci, Graves and Caswell were playing a good game, but Caswell deteriorated and danger began to come from the Wealdstone right wing. Once Boston came across to meet Gaze after Caswell had been left behind, but Gaze swung the ball across to Schofield, who reached Barlow with a smart shot. Then Baldwin slipped past Graves and passed forward to Bunce, who shot too high.

Lovell was proving his value by positioning himself well, and Golders Green were soon pressing again, but after Thomas and Ellison had failed to convert centres from Owen and Breagan, Gaze streaked away and centred well, but Graves reached the ball before Bunce. A mix-up in front of the home goal followed, and Bucci caused a moment's consternation by a close pass back to Barlow, but the goalie held it and cleared.

Apart from this one dangerous move, Bucci was playing almost the game of his life, and after his work had led to Owen striking the side of the Wealdstone net, he started the move which Gave Golders Green their first goal. This came from a perfect pass by Owen across to BREAGAN, who met it well and drove it into the far corner of the net.

Wealdstone's equaliser came at once, Gaze finding Caswell out of position and slipping through to centre to BUNCE, whose first-timer found the net.

The pace increased and excitement ran high, both goals having narrow escapes. Thomas deserved a goal when he turned round a forward pass from Lovell, Owen headed over off Thomas, and then the Greens were awarded a free-kick for hands just outside the penalty area, but Bucci's kick failed to penetrate.

At this point Graves had to leave the field through a shoulder injury. Lovell moved to centre-half and Breagan dropped back to right-half.

Golders Green stood the loss well and, while playing [with] ten men, took the lead again, ELLISON scoring after a grand piece of teamwork by Thomas, Evans and Owen. It was a perfect finish to a delightful exhibition of understanding and anticipation.

Shortly before the interval Graves returned, but was still suffering from his injury. Ellison looked a certain scorer, but was brought down in the penalty area, though it was not a case for a penalty.

After the change of ends Graves went on the right wing, where he was very much a passenger through his damaged shoulder.

Wealdstone made great efforts to draw level again, and Barlow did well to save from Baldwin with the forwards all round the goal. Schofield was well placed to take a pass from Wilson but shot yards wide across the goalmouth.

When Golders Green got going again Breagan put a long pass over to Owen, but his shot went high, and Thomas also shot over after a good run by Owen. Faulty defence work let Wealdstone through in the middle and Barlow brought off a fine save from Bunce at three yards range. Soon afterwards Gaze slammed in a shot which grazed the upright.

Owen came into prominence again and looked like scoring, but offside relieved Wealdstone, who were sent into action again by Bidewell. Schofield took up his pass, made ground and centred to BUNCE, who took it on the run and put Wealdstone on equal terms for the second time.

Thomas worked well to give Owen another opening, but the winger's shot struck the upright, and from the rebound Evans drove the ball over the top.

At the other end Barlow saved twice from Schofield, and Boston stopped Bunce after Gaze had beaten Caswell and sent in a well-judged centre.

Graves, though crippled, was responsible for the Green's next successful movement, which was finished off by OWEN, to give Golders Green their third goal, but after Barlow had pushed up a header from Bunce, Gaze beat Caswell again and centred for BALDWIN to equalise.

Practically on time Thomas brought fresh hope to Golders Green, but shot wide, and from one of Owen's centres Ellison headed over the bar.
