Golders Green, at home on Saturday, avenged their Romford defeat earlier in the season by defeating Romford 2-1. Victory only came in the last minute of the game, but it was a glorious goal and the result was well deserved.
If the Green had played throughout the season in anything like the style of their first half game on Saturday, they would have finished high up in the Athenian League table.
The defence was not brilliant, but the performance in attack was compelling of admiration, and for considerable spells the Green were all over Romford. They took the lead in the first five minutes, and Romford only equalised through a penalty. Golders Green might have restored their lead early in the second half, but W. Boston missed a penalty shot.
The Green were still without George Bucci, who had not recovered from his recent head injuries, and S.A. Barlow was absent from goal owing to a damaged arm, while Lovell was also unfit through an injured leg.
Barlow's deputy was R. Carrington, the Old Westminster Citizens' goalkeeper ; Robson took the place of Lovell, and F. Long came in for Bucci at left-half. All three performed well, but the most interesting man to watch was Ellison, who worked hard and well at inside-right throughout the match. Thomas gave a good display at centre-forward, but was overworked towards the end.
Romford made one late change, J. Hobden taking the place of R.H. Mudford at left-half.
Golders Green twice looked in scoring form at the opening. A movement on the left wing ended with Parrish holding a header from Evans. Then the right wing came into action and Breagan, taking a pass from Ellison, centred smartly to Thomas, but he was a fraction too late with his shot.
Within five minutes, however, Golders Green took the lead, ELLISON getting in with a beautiful shot following a corner forced by Breagan. His pass cam,e from Thomas, and it was a perfect movement.
Parrish had to save from Breagan and Ellison, and then F. Boston shot over from a pass by Thomas. Golders Green were swinging the ball about well, and Breagan and Ellison showed up in some quick passing and first-time shooting, so that for a time the Green were all over the visitors. F. Boston was working in well with Thomas, and he twice reached Parrish with shots that gave the goalkeeper difficulty.
A dangerous moment came when Caswell miskicked and let Patterson through, but Graves got back to put the winger off his shot.
Romford had a number of breakaways and Walker was going all out for a goal, but a penalty for hands by Graves brought the equaliser, PATTERSON being the marksman.
The Green's attack were playing a grand game, but the defence was not steady and it was clear that Lovell and Bucci were being missed. Half-time arrived with the scores unchanged.
At the restart Golders Green had a lucky let-off when Osborne shot over the top with the goalkeeper unsighted after W. Boston had blocked a shot by Patterson. The Green got going again and F. Boston called on Parrish with a nice shot taken on the run, off Evans, but Romford came back and Carrington made a miraculous save from Bridge after falling with the ball.
A hefty clearance by Graves put Golders Green all round the Romford goal, and after a general mix-up the final effort fell to F. Boston, but he failed to penetrate the crowded defence. A corner brought no result, and after two good efforts by Breagan to head into the net, Ellison had bad luck in hitting the post with a header off Breagan.
The tragedy of the afternoon, as far as the Green were concerned, was penalty wasted by W. Boston. A defender handled when Ellison centred after taking up a forward pass from Graves. W. Boston came up to take the spot-kick and drove the ball over the bar. He atoned for this soon afterwards by getting his head to the ball to save from Patterson during the next Romford attack.
Golders Green were playing a strong game now, but luck was dead against them. Twice they were pulled up for rather doubtful offsides, and once Ellison was sandwiched while going through.
The referee was consulting his watch when BREAGAN netted the winning goal for the Green, driving well in from a short pass by Evans, who shared in full the credit for the goal.
