At Claremont Road on Saturday, Golders Green continued to maintain the good form which they have recently found, when they triumphed over Barnet in a fast, interesting game by three goals to two.
The Green did well to hold Barnet in the opening stages, when the visitors' attack showed a keen edge and the Barnet forwards were playing determined and constructive football.
the game opened with plenty of action and Butler, who was Barnet's most dangerous forward throughout the game, nearly notched a goal in the first minute. He nipped in between Ellison and Kay, but Hart brought about a fine clearance and the danger was averted for the present.
Nevertheless, Barnet remained the dominating team and within five minutes Touchard had given them the lead. He ran into the penalty area with the ball, and Hart, the only player in a position to stop him, left his goal to meet TOUCHARD. But the inside-right side-stepped and flicked the ball into the empty net.
It was Golders Green who began to force the pace, and after Owen had made some fine runs down the left flank, Stroud scored the equaliser. Pulling, after a trticky piece of dribbling, sent the balll through to STROUD, who cut in towards goal and beat the goalkeeper with a low shot.
After sustained pressure, the home side forged ahead by way of a rather fortunate goal. Crocker, the Barnet right-back, attempted to clear when the ball came sailing towards his goal. He lashed at the ball but miskicked and it went the wrong way. The Barnet goalkeeper was surprised, the ball went over his head and the Green were in the lead.
The Green's second goal may have been lucky, but they were extremely unfortunate not to go further ahead a few minutes later.
Owen snapped up a pass and sent in a shot which the goalkeeper saved at the expense of conceding a corner.
Stroud took the corner and centred to Breagan, who sent a fast drive just under the bar. The ball hit the under-side of the bar and bounced out and Owen came through and finished the movement by catching the ball after it had rebounded, and ballooning it over the bar.
Barnet began to fight back gamely, and whenn the interval arrived they were on level terms.
Butler threw the ball in from touch and Wakeman gathered it and tapped it back to BUTLER who beat Hart with an accurate shot from the touch-line. Hart misjudged the ball and it swerved under the crossbar.
The football of the second half was incomparable to that of the first, it being very ragged and devoid of the finer points of the game.
Just when it seemed that stalemate had been reached and it appeared inevitable that the game would end in a draw. OWEN scored the deciding goal.
