Match Report

For the third successive week, Golders Green's defence maintained an unbeaten record, and at Claremont Road last Saturday, Tufnell Park were defeated by three clear goals, giving the Green the right to enter the 2nd round of the Middlesex Charity (Red Cross) Cup.

There were several changes in the side from that which won at Enfield the previous week. Hart returned to keep goal, and Weeks came back at centre half. Pulling was an absentee, and the versatile George Bucci played at centre forward. Shorland, home on leave from naval duties, came in at outside left, and Alexander, making his first appearance since his injury at Barnet, was his inside partner.

Tufnell Park were a sound and efficient side, but it was soon obvious that the Green were faster on the ball and just a little more forceful than their hosts. Bucci, though without the requisite speed for a centre forward, distributed the ball cleverly, and from a pass by him Shorland made an excellent run and centred across to STROUD, who opened the score after ten minutes' play.

Soon afterwards the Park had a narrow escape. Alexander, who showed some excellent touches, though tiring badly towards the end, put to Stroud, who beat two men and centred. Desborough just gathered Bucci's header. Then the Park gained a free kick and Hart, in action for the first time, saved well from McKinney. Back again, Desborough made a brilliant one hand save from Bucci, and Adams conceded a corner. Following this, Bucci again put Shorland away, and from his centre FONTANA shot. The ball slid through the goalie's legs and into the net to put the Green two up.

After the interval, Hart, coming out to meet Westwood, slipped, but recovered brilliantly to clear. At the other end, the Park's goal received a hard peppering, but the defence held, though Desborough nearly erred with a shot from Bucci, which he only gathered at the second time of asking. Then half way through this period, Stroud got away, put across to SHORLAND, whose shot was deflected into the net by a defender, putting the Green three up.

Tufnell Park never gave up trying, and launched some good attacks, but weak finishing and a sound defence prevented them from scoring. The Green had their full share of the play, and there were hectic moments in front of the Park's goal, but no further scoring.
