After a terrific struggle, Golders Green retained the [Will] Mather Cup by defeating Tufnell Park by the narrow margin of four goals to three, at Claremont Road last Saturday : the Green thus winding up their season satisfactorily with two successive wins.
The Green scored within five minutes. Henocq put Goodchild away, and the ball came to Brown, who, with a quick flick, put COX right through to score with a fine header. Ten minutes later, following a corner well taken by Worthington, the ball was deflected back to BUCCI who shot home.
At this stage, the Green seemed well on top, but the game took a quick turn. Williams, taking a free kick, put the ball forward well and DAVIES shot past Simmonds to reduce the arrears.
After three corners to the Green, Tufnell Park took up the attack again and Simmonds made several brilliant saves from close range. Three minutes before hafl time, however, a good move by Tufnell Park's forwards ended with BUSTARD shooting a great goal to level the score.
Soon after resuming, Moon gathered well as Brown was going through, but after a quarter of an hour, Golders Green attacked following a free kick ; Goodchild passed to Henocq, who put BUCCI in a position to score with a good shot.
Ten minutes later, the Park were level again. The ball came across from Weston to GILBEY who made no mistake. Soon afterwards, Weston was put clean away, but Bossoms ran across to intercept just in time. Finally, after half an hour's play, the winning goal came. Topp passed to Worthington and from his pass HENOCQ fastened on to the ball and crashed home a great goal which gave Moon no chance.
The Cup was presented to the winners by Mr. Percy Pollard, Secretary of Manor House Hospital, on behalf of which the game was played.
