Golders Green gained complete mastery over Clapton in their Herts & Middlesex League game at Claremont Road last Saturday, and, besides improving their goal average, annexed two valuable points which give them a rise of several places in the League table.
The Green made several changes from the side which had defeated Southall the previous week : Stroud was not available; Goodchild moved to outside right, and Ingham weas brought in at outside left; Bucci appeared at inside right, and the right half berth was entrusted to L. Topp, a local lad who made a most successful debut, and materially strengthened the middle line.
As frequently happens, the early stages of the game gave no indications of its later course. Clapton proved to be a very fast moving side and quickly set up some hot attacks. They were repelled thanks to the Green's solid defence. Then the home side went down the field. After six minutes' play Barker gave to Goodchild, whose shot hit the post and rebounded for BARKER to open the Green's account.
The home side took up the attack for a while ; but after a quarter of an hour, Clapton broke away, and ROBSON scored an easy goal to equalise. From the re-start, however, Golders Green attacked : Ingram passed to Barker who put BUCCI through to restore the lead from close in. Just before half time, Gallacher went through with the ball and passed forward for BARKER to make the interval score 3-1.
On resuming, Clapton made a spirited effort to reduce the arrears : McCann, who showed fine form, brought off several excellent saves, but many Clapton moves petered out in front of goal. Then, from Goodchild and Mitchell the ball was sent to INGRAM who scored with a magnificently judged shot.
After half an hour's play, excellent work by Goodchild enabled BARKER to notch the Green's fifth.
Clapton never gave up trying, but a couple of minutes later Fisher cleared the ball to Bucci, who put Goodchild away : he passed across to INGRAM, who shot another good goal to make the final score 6-1.
