Golders Green put up a fine performance at Underhill on Saturday, when they forced Barnet to a three-all draw after a thrilling game. The feat is even better than it sounds, since they had to find a substitute for Sealey, a great defensive pillar, who has now joined the forces, and for Mitchell, absent through illness.
A. Welland, home on leave, came in at left back and dealt effectively with the elusive Jordan. R. Gallacher moved to centre half, where he played a magnificent game, while F. Gallacher came in at right half and did very well indeed. The forward line was at its best in the second half, when Goodchild moved to outside right, Worthington inside left and Barnard outside left.
Barnet in the first half played down the slope, giving them the additional advantage of having the wind behind them. They scored in the fourth minute, when SAW was fortunate in putting a long shot into the net. The Green retaliated and Bunker headed out a dangerous looking shot, but for the most part during this half, Barnet were on top. The home side were kept at bay until four minutes from half time, when Jordan passed in for SAY to net -- a grand goal.
The second half saw the picture entirely reversed, with the Green on the offensive for the most part and Barnet striving to keep them out.
After a quarter of an hour a shot from Barnard was deflected back to him, and he centred across for BARKER to open the Green's account. Three minutes later Barnard again passed to Barker, who this time flicked the ball across for GOODCHILD to beat Powell : it was an excellent goal.
Straight from the restart Barnet went up the field, and with the Green's defence at sea, SAW restored the home side's lead.
Golders Green hit back, and Farrer conceded a corner, which was cleared ; at the other end, McCann saved from Jordan. But for the most part Golders Green kept Barnet defending.
Five minutes from time Barnard put the ball across. It was deflected out and went to R. GALLACHER, who sent in a long, cross lob which went over Powell's head into the net for the equaliser.
The Green again forced a corner, which was cleared, but just before the final whistle, nearly snatched the verdict, a good shot from Worthington going just over the crossbar.
Golders Green have every reason to be satisfied with the result, which brings Barnet to the Claremont Road ground for the replay on January 1.
