Match Report

For the first time in the series of war games, Golders Green lowered their colours to Wood Green Town, at White Hart Lane, on Saturday. The pitch was a bad one, making accurate football impossible.

Golders Green appeared to have realised this when, in the fist half, by hard kicking and long swinging passes, they established an ascendancy over their opponents. They had sufficient chances to have made the game safe by half time, but only led 2-1 at the interval. On resuming, Golders Green lapsed into a short passing type of game which proved fatal. The home side began to get on top, and the visiting defence was overworked. It held until 10 minutes from the end, but then collapsed so completely that 3 goals were conceded in 7 minutes, for Wood Green to run out winners by 4 goals to 2.

The game had been in progress for 15 minutes when, after Sealey had gone very near to scoring with a long dropping ball, Wood Green attached and forced a corner, from which HINSBY opened their score. The lead was short-lived, however, as following a clearance by the home defence from a good corner taken by Rogers, Mitchell gave GOODCHILD an opening which he converted.

After half an hour's play, WORTHINGTON scored from Mitchell's pass to put Golders Green ahead. Again Sealey went close with a long dropping ball, while Ridley shot just over the bar soon afterwards ; Rogers had several good chances, which came to nothing.

Gradually Wood Green got on top, but for a long time were unable to pierce Golders Green's defence, which was constantly under pressure. Then after 35 minutes' play, following a free kick, Wade sent across to BROOME who equalised.

Wood Green pressed hard and gained a corner ; as the ball came over McCann ran towards the wing to gather, but it was sent across to the other side of the goal, where SMITH had only to tap it into an empty net.

Three minutes later, Wade again passed in, and with Golders Green standing still, appealing for the obvious off-side, BROOME was allowed to go on and score Wood Green's fourth.
