Golders Green, for their concluding League game of the season, tried several young players. They gave a promising display, and with experience in the Reserve XI, should eventually reach senior standard. The goalkeeper, R. Kemp, however, gave the impression that he has already reached this standard ; he was outstanding, his work showing confidence and polish.
The Green had little luck, but in addition the forward line never functioned smoothly and the wing halves gave little support. The inside forwards held the ball too long and too many passes, when made, went astray. In the first half, Stroud was the best forward, but later he appeared to be feeling the effects of his hard game for the County the previous evening. The Green's defence was frequently in action and Fisher and King played a really fine game, while Langdale did all that was asked of him.
An early shot by Gassman earned a corner, but this was followed by a Southall attack which brought Kemp into action for a brilliant save. The Green broke through again and Gassman and Stroud did good work, but the centre forward's shot went wide. Jones foirced a corner and Marrable soon afterwards shot over from Stroud's pass. The interval came with the score sheet blank.
Almost immediately after the change of ends, Gassman made a good run and tricked Saunders, but the ball trickled outside the post. At this stage, the Green's centre forward received a leg injury and left the field. While he was off, Southall broke through and SENTENCE, receiving from close in, put the visitors ahead. As Gassman cam,e out to resume, King was injured, but after a short stoppage, was able to continue. Kemp saved splendidly from Underwood, and from the clearance an amusing incident occurred when Jones actually caught the ball with both hands in the air in first-class goalkeeper's style--and the referee allowed the game to continue, not having seen what happened. Gassman was now limping badly, and 15 minutes from time he moved to outside right, Marrable going to centre forward and Stroud to inside right.
The Green's forwards were now very disjointed, and three minutes from the end, HILL scored from a corner kick taken by Potter, to put Southall two up.
