Golders Green met Tufnell Park in the replayed semi final of the Middlesex Charity Cup at Claremont Road last Saturday, and qualified by a narrow margin to meet Southall in the Final at Brentford.
The Green just about deserved their win on their second half display ; in the first half, they were too slow in moving the ball, as well as in moving to meet it ; as a result, during this period Tufnell Park had more of the game and looked the more dangerous side.
Once again the Green's strength lay in its defence, where Lynch, King and Fisher played on top form ; it was as well they did, since Price, Muffett & Co. were speedy, clever and hard-working. In the Green's attack 17-year-old Jones took the eye for the clever way in which he crossed the ball. With experience and more weight he has the makings of a fine left-winger. Both the Green's goals were the outcome of his work.
Tufnell Park launched an early attack and seemed bent on getting a quick goal, but they were held at bay ; the game swung evenly for a while, then Tufnell Park broke through for Muffett to hit the crossbar, the ball being shot over the bar from the rebound.
After 38 minutes' play, Golders Green took the lead. Following a free kick, the ball went out to Jones, who centred beautifully and without hesitation for A. WILLIAMS to shoot home. Within five minutes, the Park were on terms ; a strong Green attack was repulsed ; Ivey cleared down the field and MUFFETT fastened on to the ball, got clear, and sped through to beat Godding.
After the change of ends, there was again the battle for supremacy, but the Green were beginning to move the ball better and gradually got on top. After 17 minutes' play, good work by Stroud sent the ball across to Jones ; he promptly centred it back to Stroud, who equally promptly crossed it for GRIFFITHS to head home. Almost immediately, Jones put over another great centre, but Griffiths, though he headed into goal, was off-side.
During the closing stages, Tufnell Park made efforts to get on terms, and Godding was called upon twice in quick succession by Smith and Muffett. A couple of minutes from the end Price had to leave the field for attention, but there was no further scoring.
