Golders Green deserved their win at Claremont Road last Saturday, when they defeated Ford Sports 2-1 in the first round of the F.A. Amateur Cup.

On a ground which was the complete opposite of the previous week's, they had the far greater share of the play. But the hard, frozen ground was treacherous to a degree, with the ball bouncing on the bumps, coming off at all sorts of unexpected angles. Often when a player was about to kick, the ball would suddenly bounce away or run up his leg. In these circumstances, much of the Green's excellent approach work came to naught. Added to this, the ground was, for the greater part of the game, blanketed by a heavy mist which made it impossible to follow the play, while the blue of Ford was completely indistinguishable from the home side's green. Confusion of passing was due to this.

The Green were a sound combination : Lynch and Bossoms were a good pair of backs, while King at centre half was outstanding. Mitchell at inside left was the mainspring of the attack, continually putting Cochrane away or slipping perfect passes through the middle, where Griffiths worked like a Trojan.

The Green started strongly, and soon began to settle down as far as the ground would permit any side to do. After 20 minutes' play, following a free kick, Griffiths put in a great shot which hit the post and rebounded into play with Harris beaten. In the 34th minute, the home side scored. King got the ball away to Cochrane, and from his pass GRIFFITHS scored with a remarkable shot.

The teams crossed right over at half-time, and soon after the restart Griffiths had bad luck with a good effort after a nice movement, while soon afterwards a glorious shot from Cochrane skimmed the cross-bar.

After 25 minutes, Ford broke away, and in a scramble in front of goal, almost invisible from the Stand, EDWARDS hooked in the equaliser. Within four minutes, however, the Greens had taken the lead again ;good work by Mitchell and Cochrane paved the way and the ball came across for STROUD to score from close range.

Another grand shot from Cochrane went just too high, before Ford rallied and put on some strong pressure. They were, however, repulsed, and just before the close, the Green gained two corners in quick succession, but no further scoring took place.
