Focus switches quickly onto 16th March, a day which has seen the club in action on no fewer than 24 occasions, three of which have been friendly matches. We have a lot to get through beginning in 1912 when QPR brought a side that contained no fewer than 9 professional players from a friendly and won 6-1, George Hyde on target for Hampstead Town.

There was then a 17-year wait until the next fixture on 16th March and in what was another friendly, Enfield this time providing the opposition, the honours were even in a 2-2 draw with A Owens and Harry Shearcroft on target. Competitive action finally got underway in 1935 on the day that Hitler officially ordered German re-armament in violation of the Treaty of Versailles with an Athenian League match against Southall at Claremont Road which also ended 2-2, Mike Fallon and Charlie Drinkwater grabbing the Golders Green goals.

In 1940 as the Luftwaffe launched an air raid on the British naval base at Scapa Flow, Billy Breagan and Harry Tomlinson scored the goals in a 2-1 Middlesex Red Cross Cup win over Hayes and then post-war 16th March life kicked off with another friendly in 1946 at Erith & Belvedere. Bob Avis, Mac Cochrane, Melvyn Griffiths and R Roberts scoring in a 4-2 win.

1957 saw the Greens take on Finchley in the semi-final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, Tommy Lawrence (2) and Pat Austin securing passage into the final with the strikes in a 3-0 win and half a dozen years later in 1963 Peter Flann was on target against Walton & Hersham in the Athenian League, however the Greens fell to a 3-1 defeat to their Surrey rivals.

Just a year later and the pursuit of the Isthmian League title continued with a 6-3 win over Walthamstow Avenue thanks to strikes from Tony Knox, Jimmy Quail, David Hyde, Peter Slade and Gerry O’Rourke, the 6th goal being an own goal. In this win the Greens set a new Isthmian League record for the number of league goals scored taking their tally to 107, beating the previous best of 104 set by Woking seven years previously.

On the day that Bobby Kennedy announced his candidacy to become US President in 1968, Maidstone United were beaten 2-0 at Claremont Road with Tony Harding and David Hogwood scoring. Just two years later in 1970 as the New English Bible was first published a visit to Wycombe Wanderers at Loakes Park ended goalless.

Exactly a year to the day later in 1971 the two sides met, once again at Loakes Park, this time the Chairboys winning 2-1, Rod Haider’s goal a mere consolation, this on the day that British PM Edward Heath met with the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland James Chichester-Clark for talks over the security situation.

There was a further double-header in 1974 and 1976 as Leytonstone were twice met in away matches in quick succession. The 1974 London Senior Cup tie ended in a 1-0 win thanks to a strike from John Baker before, on the day that Harold Wilson announced his resignation as British Prime Minister two-years later, Bobby Childs was on target in a 3-1 defeat against the East London side.

In 1985 Windsor & Eton played out a 0-0 draw with the Greens and two-years on in 1987 a visit to Walthamstow Avenue saw Neil Wolstenholme grab the only goal of the game and secure the three points to take back to North-West London.

Moving onto 1991 and a visit to Buckingham Road to take on Aylesbury ended in defeat, as so many have in this series over the past few weeks, with the Ducks winning 2-0 and Michael Banton’s goal in 1996 was not enough to prevent Dulwich Hamlet from winning 2-1 at Claremont Road to maintain the Hamlet’s title charge under Frank Murphy, who within a year would be the Hendon boss. Later that evening Mike Tyson met Frank Bruno and won by virtue of a 3rd round knock-out to gain the WBC heavyweight title.

A 1999 home match against Sutton United saw the U’s comfortably return home with a 3-0 win and three years later in 2002 Steve Butler and Byron Bubb grabbed the Hendon goals in a 2-2 draw with Hitchin Town.

Two years later a visit to Heybridge Swifts ended 0-0 and a further three years later in 2007 Darragh ‘New Bloke’ Duffy opened his Hendon account at Hayes Lane in a 1-1 draw against Bromley.

A dipping howitzer of an effort from Scott Cousins in 2010 along with a Lubo Guentchev goal saw Gary McCann’s side to a 2-1 win at home to Canvey Island at Vale Farm and five years later Andre Da Costa began his one man assault on the 2014/15 goal of the season contest with a superb free-kick against Met Police. Casey Maclaren also scored in the 2-1 win that extended the Greens’ unbeaten run into double figures.

We finish today’s round-up with a visit to rock-bottom Staines Town two years ago in which goals from Connor Calcutt (2), Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick, Luke Tingey and Matty Harriott saw Jimmy Gray’s men charge into a 5-0 half-time lead. A poor second half was partially punished as the Swans grabbed a couple of consolation goals to lend some respectability to the scoreline.

Of the 21 competitive matches to have taken place on 16th March there have been nine wins, six draws and 6 defeats with 37 goals scored and 28 conceded.
