It’s 9th March and as a result we take our retrospective back to the date of the same name and look at matches that occurred on this day over the last 113 years.

We begin in 1935 and an Athenian League tie at Leyton that ended 2-2 thanks to a couple of goals from Charlie Drinkwater on the day that Hitler publicly announced the creation of the Luftwaffe and then five years later in 1940 it was George Bucci who scored twice along with a goal from Les Fontana saw St Albans City beaten 3-1 in the Herts and Middlesex County League.

1946 saw a London Senior Cup tie with Bromley come and go, Pat Lynch’s strike nothing more than a consolation in a 4-1 defeat. There was better luck in 1957 in a Middlesex Senior Cup quarter final Laurie Topp, Jeff Darey, Tommy Lawrence and Miles Spector scored the goals in a 4-2 win over Hayes.

Spector was also on target half a dozen years later in a 1963 Athenian League match against Grays Athletic as he netted a brace, Tony Knox and Peter Flann were also on target in the 4-1 win on the day that The Beatles began their first UK tour. Two years later Oxford City were thumped 7-1 with David Hyde helping himself to a hat-trick added to by two goals from Jimmy Quail and on each from Danny Lakey and John Evans to take the Greens four points clear of Enfield in 2nd place.

Just a year later and Laurie Churchill and Dave Swain grabbed the goals as Walthamstow Avenue were beaten 2-1 in the league and then in 1968 a local derby with Enfield ended 1-1, Tony Harding grabbing the Hendon goal.

In 1971, on the day that Jack Noreiga became the first – and to date only West Indian bowler to take 9 wickets in an innings as he spun out India at Port of Spain with figures of 9-95, a visit to St Albans City ended in a goalless draw before another last-eight Middlesex Senior Cup tie in 1974, this time against Finchley, ended in a 1-0 success with Jimmy Wilsonham grabbing the crucial goal on the day that Hiroo Onoda, the last Japanese soldier to formally surrender did so in the Philippines 29-years after VJ day.

1976 saw the Greens lift the Middlesex Charity Cup with a 1-0 win over Wembley at Claremont Road thanks to a goal in extra time from Tony Field, the club’s 10th success in the competition but the first time they’d lifted the trophy since 1957 before 1982 saw a return to league action as an Alan Cosby goal earned a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers at Claremont Road.

Andy O’Brien and Steve Wilkins were on the scoresheet in 1985 in an Isthmian League match at Worthing, however the Rebels netted four of their own to win the game 4-2 before a 1991 visit to Earlsmead saw goals from Colin Tate, Lawrence Holmes and substitute Uche Egbe saw the Greens to a 3-1 win.

Five years later in 1996 a visit to Gander Green Lane saw the renaissance of Neil Price’s side continue apace as two goals from Michael Banton and another from Martin Duffield secured a surprise 3-2 win and another visit south of the river in 2002 saw Kingstonian beaten 2-1 thanks to strikes from Byron Bubb and Ricci Crace.

In 2010 a visit to Billericay Town ended in a 1-0 defeat, the Greens seeing Dave Diedhiou dismissed before a 2019 visit to Weymouth saw the eventual champions cruise to a 3-0 win over Jimmy Gray’s charges to strengthen their place at the top of the table.

Of 18 matches to have taken place on 9th March to date there have been 10 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats. 37 goals have been scored and 26 conceded.
