Today we take a look back at matches played on this day, 7th February, since the club’s inception in 1908 and begin with a 1914 Middlesex League match against rivals Bronze Athletic. Goals from J Schebsman and Arthur Humphreys gave Hampstead Town a 2-1 win.

Six-years later in 1920 an Arsenal XI visited the Avenue Ground and returned to Highbury with a 3-1 win, J Croal on target for the home side and then Stan Smith netted in a 1925 Athenian League match at Uxbridge Town who scored two of their won to take the points.

A 1931 visit to Walthamstow Avenue ended all square as the two sides shared four goals between them, Bill Morton and Freddie Evans netting and in 1948 goals from the prolific duo of Bill Reay and Bob Avis saw the points secured in a 2-0 win over Southall, also in the Athenian League.

1953 saw Cambridge City make the relatively long journey to Claremont Road only to return empty handed as the Greens won 2-1 in the Athenian League thanks to another goal from Avis that was added to by Dexter Adams whilst another visit to Southall in 1959, on the same day as Fidel Castro proclaimed the Cuban constitution, saw the Greens bow out of the Middlesex Senior Cup, Micky Moore’s goal not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat.

John Baker ensured a share of the spoils in an Amateur Cup tie in 1970 against Walton & Hersham, the 1-1 draw at Claremont Road creating a replay and in 1976 a Bobby Child strike saw the Greens to a 1-0 win over Leatherhead at Fetcham Grove.

In 1978 Cornish side Falmouth Town were forced to make the crazily long journey to Claremont Road for an FA Trophy tie on a Tuesday evening and were soundly beaten 4-0 for their troubles. Rod Haider, Glen Swaby, George Brooks and Roy Butler scored the goals before a 1981 Isthmian League game with Dulwich Hamlet ended 3-2 to the Greens thanks to a pair of Kevin Folan goals and one from Jock McGleish.

Iain Dowie netted in a 1987 match at Slough Town but saw his side slip to a 2-1 defeat and two years later, as Bjorn Borg was treated for what some have suggested was a suicide attempt in Italy, Brentford knocked the Greens out of the Middlesex Charity Cup with a 3-1 win, Gary Keen with the Hendon goal.

A rare piece of relative success against Purfleet in 1998 at Claremont Road saw a 1-1 draw thanks to Michael Banton’s goal, this on the same day as the opening ceremony of the Nagano Winter Olympics and a couple of years later in 2000 Gravesend & Northfleet were beaten 2-0 thanks to goals from Jon Daly and Marvyn Watson.

Eugene Ofori’s goal in 2004 was enough to see Dave Anderson’s side take the points from much-fancied Grays Athletic and five-years later champions-elect Dover Athletic cantered to a 3-0 win at The Crabble on their way to the title.

2015 saw the Greens shake off the dismissal of skipper Kevin Maclaren to come away from Lewes with a hard fought 2-1 win, Kezie Ibe and Casey Maclaren with the goals at the Dripping Pan and we end today with another hard fought encounter against a side from West Sussex this time rather than East as Keagan Cole’s rasping drive found the roof of the net to salvage a crucial point against high-flying Bognor Regis Town in a 2017 2-2 draw at Silver Jubilee Park, Marcel Barrington had earlier scored the other Hendon goal.

Of 18 matches to have been played on 7th February there have been 9 wins, 4 draws and 5 defeats. 29 goals have been scored and 23 conceded.
