FRIERN BARNET 2, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 3. Owing to a last-minute cancellation of their fixture with West Park, Golders Green "A" arranged a match with Friern Barnet and, after an interesting game, won by 3-2. The wind made conditions difficult, but Golders Green shaped well. They took the lead after a quarter-of-an-hour, a fine pass from Sandrock enabling MARCANTONIO to run through and score. Soon after the Green went further ahead, Sandrock again being responsible for the movement. He passed well to J. Marrable - a younger brother of "Gerry" - and he slipped the ball to WHITING, who netted, the interval score being 2-0. In the second half McLean put PINKHAM away and the centre-forward went clean through and netted the third. The home side then retaliated and scored twice, one a good goal by CROWE, who was playing for them, and one a penalty. Sandrock was outstanding in the half-back line, which gave a good performance throughout, and the goalkeeper and backs were sound, while in a satisfactory attack Pinkham and Marcantonio stood out. Golders Green "A" : P.G. Sherwood; F. Alaway, W. Noot; L. Waldeman, A. McLean, E. Sandrock; J. Lambie, J.W. Whiting, A.I. Pinkham, J. Marrable, L. Marcantonio. (Hendon Times, 08/04/1938, p.4)

LLOYDS BANK 3, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 3. This game was played at Beckenham. Kicking against the wind, Golders Green "A" were two goals in arrear at half-time, both of which came about through defensive errors on the part of the backs. After the interval, however, Sandrock gave CROWE a good pass and the inside-left went through on his own to score. The deficit was wiped out when, from a good pass by Nairn, Crowe again went away, but was forced out to the right and cleverly backheeled to ROWE, who shot home from 15 yards out. Shortly afterwards PINKHAM got through and, veering out to the left, scored with a fine cross-shot to give the visitors the lead. This was short-lived, however, for Nairn, endeavouring to pass back to the goalkeeper, lobbed the ball, and the Bank centre-forward nipped in to equalise. The team played well as a whole, but Sandrock and Pinkham were outstanding. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; F. Alaway, W. Noot; E. Sandrock, J. Nairn, J.W. Whiting; L.G. Lefevre, V. Rowe, A.I. Pinkham, R. Crowe, V. Chambers. (Hendon Times, 25/03/1938, p. 4)

THOS. COOK & SON 1, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 1. This game at Ravensbourne was a match of missed chances, the forwards on both sides being poor. Several changes had to be made in the Golders Green side. Pinkham (owing to a family bereavement), Scott and Crowe were absent. Pepler came in at outside-left, A.W. Smith moving to inside-left, Whiting took the centre-forward berth, while Rippon was at inside-right. Both goals were scored in the first half. Smith plied his colleagues with beautiful passes, most of which were wasted, but WHITING managed to turn one to good account. Cook's equalised just before half-time, Barnes, with the sun in his eyes, kicking a ball away instead of catching it and clearing. It cannoned off a player and from the rebound was put into the net. The forward play was poor in the second half, Pepler, in particular, missing several golden chances. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; F. Alaway, W. Noot; T. Nairn, J. Lambie, E. Sandrock; D. Shaw, J. Rippon, J.W. Whiting, A.W. Smith, A.S. Pepler. (Hendon Times, 18/03/1938, p. 4)

WOKING STROLLERS 1, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 1. With several of their players doing duty in the senior eleven, Golders Green "A" team did very well to play Woking Strollers to a 1-1 draw. In addition, W.E. Barnes was unable to turn out, Lefevre taking his place in goal. Rippon deputised well at right-back, while Noot was exceptionally good as his partner. Crowe moved back to right-half, but was not a success, but Whiting at left-half did quite well. The success of the afternoon was J. Lambie, at centre-half, who played a great game. The forward line, with the exception of A.W. Smith, who " spoon fed " his colleagues, was poor, and most of Smith's work was wasted. Golders Green took the lead after 15 minutes' play. Smith put the ball through to DUNNE, who had an easy chance. Woking equalised just before the interval. There was no score in the second half, the Green defence holding up the Woking attacks, but the forwards, through sheer weakness, were unable to score. Golders Green "A" : A. Lefevre; J. Rippon, W. Noot; R. Crowe, J. Lambie, J. Whiting; A. Groves, P. Dunne, A. Willis, A.W. Smith, B. Broughton. (Hendon Times, 11/03/1938, p. 4)

EASTBOURNE RESERVES 1, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 1. Played at Eastbourne last Saturday, this match provided some excellent football and the play was very even. An unfortunate injury to Waldeman five minutes after the interval necessitated the Green playing with ten men for the remainder of the game. It was then that the goalkeeper and the backs came into their own and prevented the home side from scoring several goals. The Green took the lead after 25 minutes. Sandrock got a ball well in his own penalty area, made ground and slipped through a nice pass to CROWE, who beat his man and slipped the ball into the far corner of the net, wide of the goalkeeper. The equaliser came early in the second half, soon after Waldeman left the field, but although they pressed, Eastbourne could not notch the winner. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; W. Noot, F. Alaway; L. Waldeman, E. Sandrock, J. Whiting; V. Rowe, T.J. Rippon, R. Crowe, P Dunne, A.S. Pepler. (Hendon Times, 04/03/1938, p.4)

HERTS AND BEDS REGIMENT 2, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 3. Meeting the soldiers' Kent League side, including the Army International inside-left, Pilbeam, the Golders Green juniors gave a very fine display in a well-contested game at Gravesend, and ran out winners by the odd goal of five. Supporters will be interested to hear that the Herts and Beds goalkeeper is the brother of T.E. "Tommy" Evans, one of the old first team players for Golders Green. With Peverell doing duty in the first eleven, F.W. Davis moved to centre-half and played a remarkably good game. The right wing was composed of D.H. Shaw and T.J. Rippon, the former being an excellent outside-right and the latter playing extremely well. W. Sipping did well at centre-forward, and all the remaining old members of the team performed satisfactorily. F. Alaway, at left-back, was outstanding, while Pepler and Whiting played their best games of the season. At half-time the score was 1-1, PEPLER and PILBEAM having netted for their respective sides. In the second half SHAW and PEPLER, from a penalty, added goals, while the opposing centre-forward got a good one, the final score being: Golders Green 3, Herts and Beds 2. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; W. Noot, F. Alaway; E. Sandrock, F.W. Davis, J. Whiting; D.H. Shaw, T.J. Rippon, W. Sipping, A. McKenzie, A.S. Pepler. (Hendon Times, 18/02/1938, p. 4)

FRIERN BARNET 3, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 1. Golders Green "A" were beaten by a bigger and heavier side, but the game was a close one. The victors played good football at times and were keen tacklers, as well as being quick on the ball. The Green were inclined to hold on too long and, by adopting the close game, played into their opponents' hands. Barnes played well in goal, while the backs, Alaway and Noot, were good, the former being particularly so. The halves worked hard, Davis being unfortunate in getting a nasty kick under the knee, which necessitated his being off the field for some time. The forwards were not as effective as usual, Pinkham being the best of the line, but getting poor support. Friern Barnet took the lead early on when, Barnes having the ball covered, Peverell had the misfortune to get his foot in the way and deflected a shot into his own net. The score was 0-2 at the interval, the ball coming down the field just before half-time and the centre-forward scoring from a good pass by his inside-left. Early in the second half PINKHAM reduced the arrears from a good pass by Whiting, but just before the end Friern Barnet scored again with a good effort by the centre-forward. BROCKWELL ROVERS 1, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 2. This fixture produced an exceptionally fine game, and a clean, close fight resulted in a narrow win for Golders Green "A". Preston was unable to play (for business reasons) and Whiting came in at right-half. Sexton was the " star turn " of the match and he was ably supported by a team which was solid in every position. A rather small and sloping pitch rather handicapped the Green and Brockwell went away and scored in the first five minutes, their centre-forward slipping the ball past Peverell and running through to beat Barnes. PEVERELL equalised direct from a free kick, the ball entering the net like a bullet from 35 yards' range. The interval score was 1-1. In the second half Davis gave a lovely pass to Waldeman, the Austrian International, who put out to Storrie. PINKHAM got his foot to the winger's centre to give the Green the winning goal. The "A" team trainer, Mr. Lefevre, refereed the game admirably, being complimented by the opposing side on his impartiality. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; F. Alaway, W. Noot; J.W. Whiting, A.S. Peverell, F.W. Davis; R. Storrie, I. Waldeman, B. Sexton, A.I. Pinkham, A.S. Pepler. (Hendon Times, 04/02/1938, p.4)

LONG GROVE 0, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 3. The Golders Green Strollers side gained another victory on Saturday, beating Long Grove fairly comfortably by 3-0. Except for the first ten minutes, the "A" team goal was never in danger, Barnes, Alaway and Noot doing all that was asked of them. Noot, in particular, played an excellent game. The half-back line functioned well. Whiting played a captain's game, Peverell was excellent, and Preston played his best for many weeks. The forward line was forceful, and showed some excellent combination. Sexton, the young player from Colchester, was excellent at centre-forward. He is speedy, direct, and shoots well with both feet. The right wing was Dunne and Waldeman. The former, just recovered from his injury, did well in the circumstances, while the latter made some excellent passes, but tends to hold on too long at times. Pinkham, at inside-left, is a valuable player with a fine turn of speed off the mark, and his partner, Sandrock, worked hard, but was not quite up to his best form. DUNNE opened the scoring and SEXTON got the second, and was unfortunate in not notching another point soon afterwards. The scoring was completed by PINKHAM, while the defence kept a clean sheet. ACHILLARDS SPORTS CLUB 0, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 6. Owing to cancellation at the last minute of their original fixture, Golders Green "A" journeyed to Sutton to play Achillards Sports Club. V.F. ROWE, the team secretary, had to turn out to make up the eleven, owing to McGuckin not being available, and he netted four times. The ground was heavy, but within ten minutes the "A" side were two up. Pinkham, whose pace throughout was amazing, made both openings. Just before half-time the same player gave STORRIE a chance, which was taken, the interval arriving with the score 3-0. Dunne received a nasty head injury and had to be taken to the doctor, but he was unable to resume. The second half was a repetition of the first, the home defence failing in its efforts to put the "A" forwards offside. Pinkham played a magnificent game. He is very fast and uses both feet, always keeping the ball moving goalwards. He was ably supported by the whole forward line, which was on top form. Preston had a good game at centre-half, and the two wing halves gave the forwards plenty of chances, while the backs and the goalkeeper gave good displays, Barnes distinguishing himself by saving two penalties. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; W. Noot, F. Alaway; J.H. Whiting, H. Preston, E. Sandrock; R. Storrie, P. Dunne, A.I. Pinkham, V.F. Rowe, A.S. Peplar. (Hendon Times, 14/01/1938, p.4)

DARENTH PARK, DARTFORD 2, GOLDERS GREEN “A” 3. Golders Green Strollers played one of their best games for a long time when they beat a strong Darenth Park eleven by the odd goal of five. The whole team worked well together. Barnes played a safe game in goal, while the backs, Alaway and Noot, protected him admirably, clearing well and kicking a fine length. The halves were good both in defence and attack, feeding their forwards admirably. Crowe and Sandrock, the inside forwards, schemed well and passed accurately, while the wingers gave very promising displays. Pinkham, at centre-forward, was fast and led the line well. Golders Green “A”: W.E. Barnes; F. Alaway, W. Noot; J.W. Whiting, A.S. Peverell, H. Preston; R. Storrie, R. Crowe, A.I. Pinkham, E. Sandrock, A.S. Peplar. (Hendon Times, 07/01/1938, p. 4)

CIVIL SERVICE "A" 4, GOLDERS GREEN "A" 1. Fielding a side weakened by injuries, Golders Green Strollers lost their second round A.F.A. Minor Cup-tie by 4-1 on Saturday. Alaway, Crowe and Sandrock were all unfit, and Hall, Lefevre and Rowe deputised. At the opening of the game a hard shot struck Peverell on the arm and the referee awarded a penalty, from which the Service took the lead. In under 10 minutes three more goals were piled on, chiefly through the Green trying offside tactics unsuccessfully. Generally the team was below standard, except for Whiting and Preston, who worked well and hard. V. ROWE scored the Green's only goal just before half-time, the second half being entirely goal-less. In the forward line Dunne worked well, but the tendency throughout was to keep the ball too close. Golders Green "A" : L.C. Lefevre; A. Hall, W. Noot; J.W. Whiting, A. Peverell, H. Preston; D. Churchill, P. Dunne, R.P. Hughes, V.F. Rowe, W.E. Barnes. The "A" team have no fixtures over Christmas. (Hendon Times, 24/12/1937, p. 2)

GOLDERS GREEN "A" 5, NOMADS (UNIVERSITY COLLEGE) 1. Owing to the absence of Kinsella, the selected goalkeeper, and of H. Preston, changes took place in the Golders Green "A" team on Saturday. L. Lefevre played in goal and gave a sound exhibition under terrible conditions. A.S. Pepler took over at left-half and seemed more at home there than in the forward line, working hard and feeding his wings well. The halves had a grip on the game all the way through, and at half-time the Green led by the only goal scored. In the second half they went well ahead and ran out comfortable winners. Barnes excelled at back, and Peverell played an extremely fine game. The forward line generally did very well. Golders Green "A" : L.G. Lefevre; A. Draper, W.E. Barnes; J.W. Whiting, A.S. Peverell; A.S. Pepler; D. Churchill, P. Dunne, R.P. Hughes, R. Crowe, E. Sandrock. (Hendon Times, 17/12/1937, p.4)

GOLDERS GREEN "A" 3, SPRINGFIELD M.H. 3. Several enforced changes, through the calls of the Reserve eleven and through absentees, tended to weaken the Golders Green "A" team for the game with Springfield on Saturday. The first half was full of good football, however, though the interval came with no score. The second half saw the Green's defence crack badly and within 10 minutes the home side had scored three times. With their backs to the wall, however, the "A" boys pulled the game out of the fire and, in the last quarter-of-an-hour, not only did they equalise, but Hughes and Wilsher were unlucky in not getting the winner. Perhaps a draw was a fairer result. Peverell, at centre-half, was outstanding and played a very fine game. He was ably supported by Noot, Preston, Sandrock and Churchill. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; F. Hall, W. Noot; J.W. Whiting, A.S. Peverell, H. Preston; D. Churchill, V.F. Rowe, J.W. Wilsher, R.P. Hughes, E. Sandrock. (Hendon Times, 03/12/1937, p. 4)

GOLDERS GREEN "A" 3, BROCKWELL ROVERS 4. Golders Green "A" played Brockwell Rovers in a friendly match on Saturday at Purley, and a very enjoyable game resulted. The Green took some time to settle down and were two goals down at half-time. Barnes, in goal, was not too safe, and Preston was unfortunately suffering from a chill, which affected his play. In the second half CROWE and McKENZIE netted to bring the scores level, and then the Green took the lead through another goal by CROWE, who played a useful game at centre-forward, although his heading is not too good. Brockwell rallied and netted two more goals to win by the odd goal of seven. The outstanding player of the side was McKenzie at inside-left, who was in a class by himself. He opened up the game well and was always ready to lend a hand in defence. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; A.S. Peverell, W. Noot; J.W. Whiting, H. Preston, A.s. Pepler; D. Churchill, P. Dunne, R. Crowe, A. McKenzie, E. Sandrock. (Hendon Times, 26/11/1937, p. 4)

Playing against Southgate Olympic on Saturday, in the A.F.A. Minor Cup, Golders Green "A" won by 6 goals to 1. The goalscorers were CROWE (2), CHURCHILL, DUNNE, McKENZIE and SANDROCK. It was not a great game, owing to the visiting forwards being too individual, although they met a good defence in Peverell and Noot, the Golders Green backs. The Golders Green forwards were good, Dunne and McKenzie opening up the game well. Preston gave a sterling display at centre-half and should prove a worthy successor to Pearson, who has gone up North. McKenzie supplied many subtle passes, while Sandrock filled the left-wing position more than adequately. (Hendon Times, 19/11/1937, p.4)

Owing to a last-minute cancellation of their fixture by P.L.A., the Golders Green "A" team arranged a game with Harrodian F.C.[, but lost by 2-1.] Dunne was called for duty with the reserves, and Preston was unable to get away from business, so that the side was weakened. It was not a good game owing to lack of skill in the forward line. The defence was splendid and Pearson was outstanding with clever work both in attack and defence. Sandrock, at left-half, showed great promise, while Crowe worked well fo openings, but received no support from his forwards, who, with the exception of Churchill, were poor. The Green scored first through HUGHES, following a good moverment by Crowe and Churchill. Harrodian drew level before half-time and scored again just after the interval. For the last 25 minutes the "A" team had most of the play, but were unable to equalise. Golders Green "A" : W.E. Barnes; A.S. Peverell, W. Noot; J.W. Whiting, J.H. Pearson, E. Sandrock; D. Churchill, R. Crowe, C. Monk, R.P. Hughes, A.S. Pepler. (Hendon Times, 05/11/1937, p.4)

GOLDERS GREEN "A" 0, MANOR F.C., EPSOM 4.--- Played in pouring rain and on a slippery surface, this match demonstrated the necessity of a team adapting itself to conditions. Although without four of their best players, Golders Green should have done better. The goalkeeper was very shaky, and should have saved two of the shots which scored. Whiting, at right-back, with his partner, Barnes, defended stubbornly, but the halves were outclassed b y the opposition, and were seldom in the right place. Dunne tried very hard to get the forward line going, but without success, as apart from Harding they were poor. Crowe had three good chances, of which he failed to take advantage. Golders Green "A" : J.H. Cohen; J.W. Whiting, W.E. Barnes; A.S. Peverell, A.F. Bates, A.S. Pepler ; D. Churchill, P. Dunne, R. Crowe, R.P. Hughes, R. Harding. (Hendon Times, 29/10/1937, p.4)

Golders Green "A" team, competing in a friendly match with Lloyds Bank III, gained a clear-cut victory [by 4 goals to 0] after an exceptionally fine game in which the exchanges were even until 20 minutes from the end. A new goalkeeper, J.S. Cohen, madce a successful dcebut. He has a safe pair of hands and kicks well, so that he inspired the defence with confidence. Pearson and Preston, in the half-back line, were outstanding, while the inside forwards, Hughes and Dunne, opened up the game well. CROWE received some lovely through passes from these players and crowned a good afternoon's work by scoring all four goals. Golders Green team : J.S. Cohen; W.E. Barnes, J.W. Whiting; N. Crespi, J.H. Pearson, H. Preston; D. Churchill, P. Dunne, R. Crowe, R.P. Hughes, A.S. Pepler. (Hendon Times, 22/10/1937, p.4)

A thrilling game ended in a fine win for the Golders Green Colts by 7-4, after being three down in 10 minutes. Bad covering was responsible for early reverses, but once this was corrected the team settled down and drew level before half-time, WOODBRIDGE, PEPLER and ROWE netting. In the second half the defence was again caught napping, and Bexley took the lead, but after this the Green had a much bigger share of the game. Three goals from PEPLER and one from HUGHES settled the issue. The side played well together, and credit is due to the defence for shaping so well, in view of the fact that Noot, the regular back, being required for duty with the second eleven, was absent. Churchill gave a fine display and three of Pepler's goals came from centres from the right wing. Alaway was exceptionally safe, Pearson at centre-half was outstanding, and Preston fed the forwards skilfully with carpet passes. Bexley are a strong side, and every credit is due to the Golders Green Strollers for an all-round good display. Golders Green "A" : W. E. Barnes; R. Crowe, F. Alaway; J. W. Whiting, J. H. Pearson, H. Golders Green "A" team went to Gravesend to play a strong side of the Herts and Beds Regiment, and although two players selected had to be replaced by reserves, they only lost by 2-3. It was a splendid game. The Soldiers shot hard and often, making ground with long passes, but the Green were not nearly so direct, and lost many opportunities. Barnes (in goal vice Edghill), H. Preston and R. P. Hughes were outstanding. Scorers: R. P. HUGHES, D. CHURCHILL Golders Green team : W. E. Barnes; V. F. Rowe, W. Noot; J. W. Whiting, R. Crowe, H. Preston; D. Churchill, R. Golders Green "A" team, under the secretaryship and guidance of Mr. V. F. Rowe, has been running for a couple of years, and was formed with the object of bringing on young players of promise, who could ultimately be drafted into the Reserves and then into the First XI. Very good work is being done, and last Saturday the team drew 2-2 with Woking Strollers. It was a pleasant game under ideal conditions. Edghill misjudged a high dropping shot in the first five minutes, but after this settled down to play a sound game. W Noot, at left-back, was outstanding in a steady defence, while the forwards combined at times exceptionally well, though near goal Bignell, Grys and Pepler were hopelessly at sea. CHURCHILL scored a neat goal from a pass by Hughes, who worked hard and well to create openings for his colleagues. Later V. ROWE and Whiting changed places, and the former obtained the equaliser. "A" team : F. Edghill; V. F. Rowe, W. Noot; J. W. Whiting, R. Crowe, H. Preston; D. Churchill, R. Bignell, F. P. le Grys, R. P. Hughes, A. S. Pepler. (Hendon Times, 24/09/1937, p. 4)
