Defender who would go on to represent Arsenal under the great Herbert Chapman, winning the First Division title in 1937/38. Bernard gained a full English international cap in a 3-2 defeat in Belgium thus holding the distinction of being the last amateur player to gain a full English cap.
In 1936, Bernard captained the Great Britain team at the Berlin Summer Olympics and won 10 caps for England Amateurs.
After leaving the club, Bernard would feature for Southend, Fulham as well as Southampton and West Ham during the war. He also played for Corinthians and famously for Casuals. He was awarded the OBE in the 1977 Silver Jubilee honours.
