The Pinner visitors to Golders Green on Saturday included Ronnie Rowe (capt.), who was at one time a Golders Green player.
In the Golders Green team Ralph Ward returned to right-half and Hill moved across to inside-right, where he gave quite a good performance and proved a better partner for Breagan than was Bucci the previous week, but Breagan was somewhat slower than is his wont.
Particular interest centred upon R.H. Brown, the Middlesex County player, who took the inside-left position, and strengthened the line, while F. Boston was welcomed back on the left wing and scored two of the four goals.
The best men in the team were undoubtedly Brown, Lewin (who scored the second goal), Graves and W. Boston - not forgetting the steady work of Barlow between the posts.
Pinner kicked off and started swinging the ball about, attempting a raid by both wings in quick succession. Graves and W. Boston proved their stumbling blocks, and a long clearance by Boston sent Johnny Hill away, to work well into the Pinner ground and pass to Breagan, who came to shoot, but placed the ball wide. Golders Green forced a corner without advantage, and the game moved to the other end, where Whiting broke clean away and took a shot on the run, driving over the bar. Soon afterwards Barlow came out to pick up the ball in front of Whiting.
Johnny Hill soon came into prominence again when he beat the centre-half and pasxsed well across to the left for F. Boston to turn round a grand shot, Killick punching out as he fell. Brown was waiting to finish off, and it was a lucky escape for Pinner. Next F. Boston struck the crossbar, and Brown, taking up a pass from Hill, shot behind.
Pinner were led to the attack again by Snoad, well supported by Rowe, but the latter missed with his shot. Another Pinner advance was stopped by a free-kick for handling, following which Davis pushed forward to F. Boston, who centred neatly, Brown shooting inches too high.
Pinner gained ground through two free-kicks, but Graves and Davis cleared the ball up the field where Boston drove close across the goalmouth. Hill recovered it, but shot yards wide of the net.
A good piece of work by Ward led to an opening for Brown, but H. Bowell slipped back in time to put him off, and he passed out to F. Boston, who sent in a smashing shot, only to see a grand save by Killick.
Golders Green lost one or two opportunities through the halves leaving F. Boston mis-served for a time, but Brown engineered a good opening for Breagan, and Killick did well to clear. Davis came through to shoot, and from a short pass by Lewin, Hill placed the ball to the top of the posts, but Killick held it.
Once Golders Green defence failed badly to let in the Pinner left wing, and C.W. Hill centred to Whiting, who had only the goalkeeper to beat. It looked a certain score, but Barlow brought off a magnificent save.
Golders Green's first goal followed a throw-in from near the halfway line. Hill secured the ball, ran it to the penalty area and passed to Brown, who drew the defence and passed out to F. BOSTON. He was left with a clear avenue to goal and slipped in to beat Killick easily.
A header by Brown off a free-kick taken by Graves should have succeeded, but Killick was too smart. Again Brown headed from a corner kick by Breagan, but Gadsden cleared.
After a raid by the Pinner right wing, ended with Snoad shooting too high, LEWIN took up a pass from Hill and finished off well to put Golders Green two up before the interval.
Golders Green started strongly after the change of ends. Boston broke away and swung the ball in to Brown, who shot into Killick's hands. Boston then forced a corner, but this was cleared and Sheehan pushed the ball out to Snoad, who made ground and centred, but Graves beat Whiting to the ball and put Golders Green on the attack again. Shots from Lewin, Brown and Boston failed, and when Golders Green fell back, Caswell miskicked, letting Rowe through, and Graves had to give away a corner. This resulted in F.H. BOWELL scoring Pinner's only goal, shooting in past Graves and Barlow.
For the remainder of the game Golders Green were entirely on top, but did not make good enough use of their chances. One of F. Boston's best efforts was a free-kick rather far out, the ball dropping just below the bar and Killick pushing it up to concede a corner.
A quick attack in the centre by Pinner was repulsed, and Ward got the ball forward to Breagan, who hit the crossbar. Lewin called upon Killick several times, and W. Boston came up to send in a clever shot, but Killick leapt for the ball and held it.
A spectacular bit of work by Lewin followed. Taking up a forward pass, he cut round the centre-half and Morton and got in a stinging shot, but lifted the ball a trifle too high.
JOHNNY HILL scored Golders Green's third goal, heading in from a free-kick taken by F. Boston.
In the closing stages Golders Green were awarded a penalty for H.E. Bowell holding Lewin. F. Boston took the spot kick and hit Killick's knees, the ball bouncing clear of the goal.
It appeared, indeed, almost as though he had not tried to score.
Two corners followed, and close on time F. Boston scored the fourth and last goal from a pass across by Hill.
