Golders Green put up a good show at Leyton in their Athenian League game last Saturday, against skilful and well-trained opposition. The opening half saw the visitors on top, but the forwards refused to shoot. The Green's defence was sound, with Lynch and Topp in form, but Floyd found Page awkward to deal with. In the second half, Leyton's long down-field kicking and nippy, purposeful forward line were a continual danger; when Leyton attacked, their five forwards were up, swung the ball about well, and both wingers centred quickly and accurately. The Green vanguard did not attack as a line, and centres from Stroud were few, though he did well in mid-field.

F. Williams made a successful debut at left-half;the Green have a useful side, but lack method and purpose in attack.

Golders Green took the lead after 25 minutes, when Fair, showing speed and energy, got through and passed in to Griffiths; Watson intervened to stop a pass to King, and had the misfortune to turn the ball past his own 'keeper into the net. Then Stroud put across a perfect centre, and King hooked the ball just over the bar. Just before half-time, Fair gave Griffiths a fine chance but, with Gibbs out of goal, the ball went wide.

After the interval the defence was under heavy pressure, and after 25 minutes, Leyton equalised. A long ball from Watson reached Page, and from his pass CULLUM easily beat Roberts.

Leyton pressed hard, and in the failing light, about 10 minutes from time, Biggs got away on the right, a defensive off-side trap failed, and PAGE gave Leyton the winning goal. Sterling defensive play prevented Leyton from adding to their score. On the other hand, it was no mean feat to hold to a single goal a side which had defeated Hayes 5-0, and drawn at Sutton with the formidable United XI. It was a match that the Green might easily have won had the attack taken its chances.
