Last season, when we faced Southall in the league, spectators were treated to two of the most chaotic games of the season. This season, the match at Silver Jubilee Park was scheduled for the August bank holiday, and it certainly did not disappoint.
Southall started the match strongly, applying continued pressure. Inside just eight minutes, Bill Montague rounded Josh Strizovic, but captain fantastic Jordan Williams was there to prevent Southall from taking the lead with a crucial sliding challenge.
It didn’t take long after Montague’s chance, however, for Southall to take the lead. Dan HECTOR stepped up to a free kick from 25 yards and curled it beautifully past Strizovic, who was helpless on this occasion.
Other than continued pressure from the away side and an Isaac Stones penalty shout at the other end, it was a relatively quiet remainder of the first half in a bank holiday derby fixture that would prove to be a game of two halves.
In the 42nd minute, there was more bad injury news for Hendon as in-form Radu Stefanoaica appeared to be carrying a knock. Adam Fisher decided he could not continue and immediately replaced him with youngster Reece Nicholas-Davies.
Half-time: Hendon 0-1 Southall
Hendon needed a big second half and started with intent. Jordan Williams headed towards the back post from a corner, forcing the Southall goalkeeper into an incredible save. He then hit a volley straight down the throat of the goalkeeper, forcing a more routine save.
Third time was the charm for the skipper, however, as in the 68th minute WILLIAMS was found by Tyler Notley at the far post, where he powered home in front of the McCann Stand to make it 1-1.
The scoreboard was only briefly level, much to the Dons’ frustration. Bill MONTAGUEpicked the ball up on the edge of the box and placed a low shot into the bottom corner past Strizovic, making it 2-1 to Southall and marking another twist in a derby fixture that had plenty!
It is Hendon vs Southall, so if you thought that was all the entertainment that was going to be produced, you couldn’t have been further from the truth.
Nathan Brathwaite was tenacious down the left flank, running at the full-back. The ball was then dragged back to Harry BRANT, who picked his spot exquisitely to make it 2-2 with seven minutes of normal time remaining.
Unfortunately for anyone who suffers with nerves, that was not the end of the drama.
Just four minutes later, FERDINAND found an ounce of space for Southall on the edge of the box. He took full advantage and let fly, producing a shot that just escaped Strizovic at full stretch to make it 3-2 to Southall in the dying embers of normal time.
Think again if you thought the next action would be the full-time whistle.
Somehow, there was still time for another twist.
Isaac Stones sensed another twist in the tale — and he sensed correctly. He kept the ball alive and played in Reece NICHOLAS-DAVIES, who had space to release a shot that eventually made its way under the Southall goalkeeper in the 92nd minute to make it 3-3.
Incredible scenes at Silver Jubilee Park in an early contender for game of the season.
Shortly after, the referee blew for full-time and, for fans and players alike, it was time for a much-needed breather after an extremely chaotic game of Step 4 football.
Next up is Hullbridge Sports at home on Saturday, and if that hasn’t convinced football fans to come and check Hendon out, then who knows what will?
Full-time: Hendon 3-3 Southall
