NOTE 1: Showing a player's name does NOT necessarily mean that he has signed for the club for the new season. For the latest list of announced signings, see the Squad List on the website. This will be updated as more signings are announced.
NOTE 2: Richard Asamoah was expected to start in the #11 shirt. However, he injured a knee in the pre-match warm-up, and swapped shirts with Rhys Murrell-Williamson, who started the game.
Hendon won their second pre-season friendly at Northwood by 1-0, thanks to a Niko Muir goal halfway through the second half. Additionally, this is the first clean sheet for Hendon since the 3-0 home League win over Whitehawk last November.
Hendon's starting line-up contained seven signed players and four known trialists, and the team seemed to gell immediately. They had the better of the first half and came close to scoring several times, though it must be said that neither goalkeeper was overworked in the first half, as chances at either end were few, and half-chances were usually cleared by the defences, though not without difficulty on several occasions. It must be said that the pairing of Nikolai Krokhin and J'Ardell Stirling at centre-back gave the Hendon defence much more solidity than has previously been seen in pre-season. The first half ended goalless.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first for the first 15 minutes or so, then, in a Hendon attack, Tariq Straker was brought down in the penalty area, but the referee awarded Northwood a goal-kick. This brought some vociferous complaints from several Hendon players together with the bench. The referee came over to talk to the bench - he admitted there was contact but felt a penalty was unwarranted, and showed two yellow cards to members of the bench.
A few minutes later Straker was involved in a penalty claim at the other end. He brought down Kush Lewis-Thomas inside the penalty area, but the referee decreed that Straker had initially fouled the Northwood player outside the box. This also brought vociferous complaints, and this time members of Northwood's bench were shown yellow cards. The free-kick came to nothing.
As the midpoint of the second half approached Hendon worked a right wing move, which led to a player beating the offside trap, cutting in, and laying a pass back to NIKO MUIR, who took little time in slotting the ball into the net, the 'keeper being out of goal having been beaten by the pass from the byeline.
Immediately after the goal Hendon made a change, Shaun Lucien replacing Rhys Murrell-Williamson. Within the next ten minutes they made five more changes, none of which seemed to weaken the side.
During the second half Northwood had two other penalty claims, apart from that already mentioned turned down. In both cases the referee awarded the Greens a free-kick and booked the Northwood player for simulation.
Hendon should have increased their lead when Solomon Tabase got away down the left and crossed the ball into the area where both Muir and Lucien were waiting along with a couple of defenders. Lucien and Muir rather got in each others way and the defenders manged to smuggle the ball back to their 'keeper.
Not long after this the final whistle wentwith Hendon victorious by 1-0. The difference in the Green's defence in this match compared to others is that the centre-back pairings were so strong that the writer cannot remember Josh Strizovic having to dive for the ball at any time in the match.
