Match Report

Hendon's search for a first away league victory of the campaign continued as they were defeated 2-1 at Kingstonian on Monday evening at a chilly Kingsmeadow.

Gary McCann made three changes to the starting line-up, with Elliott Brathwaite, Isaiah Rankin and Darren Currie replacing James Fisher, Greg Ngoyi and Julian Owusu, the latter dropping to the bench.

It was yet another game where the Greens played some excellent passing football, but lacked the crucial final ball and were made to pay by their more clinical hosts.

Kingstonian had the first chance of the game in the 3rd minute when Berkley Laurencin was forced into an excellent low save near his post by Andre McCollin.

The opening exchanges then saw both teams have plenty of possession but not do very much in the final third, until the 19th minute when the home side took the lead.

A corner was sent across the goal, and went across to the opposite wing. The ball was crossed back into the box and after Wade Small had missed an attempted bicycle kick, Kieran Murphy pounced to score.

Belal Aite-Ouakrim had the first chance for the Greens a couple of minutes later, but his header was directed straight at Rob Tolfrey in the home goal. Shortly afterwards, Dave Diedhiou, who was probably the Greens best player on the night, did exceptionally well to control the ball while he was lying on the ground, but not only that, he got up and fired a shot narrowly over the bar.

Scott Cousins then had a shot go over the bar, before Laurencin made an excellent interception when McCollin looked to be through on goal.

In the 41st minute, the Greens gave away a free kick around 25 yards from goal. Unfortunately the defensive wall didn't do it's job and Matt Pattinson's strike flew into the top corner of the net giving Laurencin no chance.

Hendon started the second half very brightly and Rankin registered a shot on target, but like Aite-Ouakrim in the first half, his effort was straight at Tolfrey. A few minutes later Callum McNaughton fired a header over the bar from a free kick at the other end.

The Greens then took control of the game for the best part of 20 minutes, having the vast majority of possession. Sadly, as has so often been the case this season, there was no end product.

They were almost made to pay in the 68th minute when Pattinson was very unfortunate not to score a second free kick. His effort hit the post, then hit Laurencin on the back of the head, but went over the bar for a corner.

There was then very little in the way of goalmouth action until the last couple of minutes. First of all Rankin headed narrowly wide from a corner, and then moments later the Greens did find the back of the net.

Laurencin launched the ball into the Kingstonian half, where Jack Mazzone picked up possession. He carried the ball forward and played a perfect cross into the path of Owusu who slotted the ball home.

Unfortunately the Greens were unable to fashion another chance in the couple of minutes of stoppage time that remained.

Whilst they had more than their fair share of possession, possession doesn't win football matches, goals do, and the Greens desperately need to find the back of the net on a far more frequent basis.

"It was a similar performance to the one at Wealdstone, maybe a little better. It was disappointing to say the least. We conceded a needless corner for the first goal and the after that it was a catalogue of errors," said Gary McCann after the game.

"In the second half we started to create when they began to get a bit tired. We finally scored when it was too late to act upon it.

"At present we are in a dogfight. We are not doing enough to win games - at both ends. In recent weeks we have been conceding poor goals and not scoring enough. There needs to be an upturn in results, more than performances."
