Match Report

Hendon kept their first clean sheet of the campaign on Monday afternoon as they played out a goalless draw at Whitehawk in a game where chances were at a premium.

The Greens made just one change to their starting line-up, with Darren Currie coming in for his first start of the season replacing James Parker, which resulted in a reshuffle that saw Howard Hall drop into the back four.

Hendon had a very lively start, forcing two corners in the first five minutes, but the game soon settled down.

The first chance of the game came in the 9th minute when Whitehawk were awarded a free kick about 25 yards from goal. Josh Jones stepped up but his effort flew high and wide of the goal. Ten minutes later Ben Godfrey looked well placed to score but Wayne Walters and Mo Maan did enough to put him off.

The Greens grew into the game as the half progressed, having much of the possession but struggling to create much in the way of chances. However in the 26th minute a move involving Currie, Bradley Wadkins and Jack Mazzone saw the latter fire a shot narrowly over the bar.

In the 36th minute Hendon had another chance when Currie set up Dean Cracknell, but his shot lacked power and Whitehawk's keeper Chris Winterton was able to gather the ball comfortably.

Shortly before half time Jones had another chance to open the scoring for the home side, but again his effort went over the bar.

The second half saw the Greens going up the hill, and two minutes into the period Mazzone got himself into a good position but he screwed his shot and the Hawks were able to clear their lines.

Four minutes after that, Mazzone had his, and the Greens, best chance of the game when he found himself in space as a cross came into his box. The youngster did everything right and directed his header across the keeper, and it appeared to be destined for the bottom corner, but Winterton pulled off an outstanding fingertip save to put it wide for a corner.

Whitehawk then came into the game and had their best period of the match with both Godfrey and Tommy Fraser having chances but failing to test Maan in the Hendon goal. Almost immediately a Hendon defender played a poor ball across the box which was intercepted by McGleish, but his shot was well saved by Maan, tipping the ball out for a corner.

The home side continued to control the game, but failed to test Maan any further, any half-chances flying either comfortably high or wide of the target.

In the 75th minute, Maan inadvertently handled the ball outside the area and a free-kick was awarded. However, Whitehawk failed to take any advantage and the Hendon defence, who had their best game of the season so far, dealt with the situation very competently.

With just a few minutes to go, the Greens had what appeared to be a good penalty shout turned down when Howard Hall seemed to be flattened in the box, but the referee waved the claims away and allowed play to continue.

The final chances of the game fell to Hendon, but George Daly was unable to get his shot off, while Scott Shulton's effort flew well over the bar.

"We did ok today," said Gary McCann after the game, "but I'm a little disappointed to get just one point. However, in the cold light of day a point at the 2nd favourites won't look too bad. It was a match with no spills and no thrills but their keeper made a superb save from Jack Mazzone.

"Defensively we were very good today, but flat going forward. If we had been fully fit and firing I am confident that we would have won the game."
