Golders Green were beaten on their merits by Barnet at Underhill last Saturday in the Herts & Middlesex League, though the score of 5-1 exaggerates the home side's superiority. It was one of those days when nothing came off for the Green's attack, while every defensive error led to an adverse goal.
As against this, however, Barnet had a strong defence, in which E. Hawkins, playing for the first time this season, was prominent, and their forward line was fast and forceful -- it was here, in fact, that their superiority lay. Golders Green's vanguard never attacked methodically : their work, compared with that of their hosts, was patchy and faltering, and there was lack of method and punch.
The Green made several changes : A. Elmer, introduced at outside right, created a good impression in his first game, he showed ability in coping with his opponent and in getting centres across; Cochrane, home on leave, came in at inside right, E. Worthington sportingly standing down to give him a game. The half back line was good, Bucci, coming in at left half, being outstanding.
Golders Green started strongly, playing up the not inconsiderable slope, but after only three minutes, Barnet, entering the Green's half of the field for the first time, scored, REILLY converting Cooper's pass. Their second goal, a few minutes later, was a lucky one. A clearance by Fisher hit Say, and ricocheted back almost to the goal line, where Reilly touched it in for JORDAN to score.
Barnet were swinging the ball well, and after 25 minutes, JORDAN, receiving from Cooper, notched their third. Just on half time, which came with Barnet leading 3-0, Bucci gave Goodchild a fine pass, and McCarthy was only able to punch out the winger's shot. Fortunately, the ball went to Pullen who was able to clear.
After 15 minutes of the second half, Barnet added to their lead, when the ball came across from Reilly to COOPER, who was standing unmarked. He scored with a fine shot which gave McCann no chance. At this stage Golders Green made some positional changes, but soon afterwards Cooper got away on the right, and centred across to SAY who notched Barnet's fifth.
Golders Green began to exert heavy pressure, and continued for the rest of the game, but method was lacking. They were awarded a penalty for hands, but Chappell shot straight at McCarthy, who cleared well : The Green followed with two corners in quick succession, and from the second Goodchild shot over the bar : McCarthy had to deal with shots from Goodchild and Mitchell, but was not seriously troubled. Then, five minutes from time, there was heavy pressure in front of the Barnet goal. Elmer put the ball in and CHAPPELL scored the visitors' consolation point.
