Match Report

Golders Green may consider themselves unfortunate to have lost by the odd goal of five to Southall last Saturday. Shots from Pulling, Cochrane and Shorland, which would normally have scored, each hit the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten, while in the second half Southall were practically penned in their own half.

On the other hand, credit must be given to the winners, and especially to their centre forward, Clare, for taking every chance offered. The visitors' forwards, playing brilliantly in their approach work, were woefully weak in front of goal. Instead of attacking as an organised line, they attacked in a bunch. This gave them no room to manoeuvre, and also enabled the defence to pack itself against the danger. Further, many chances were wasted through weak shooting.

The defence was good, though Hart's kicking a "dead" ball leaves much to be desired; Ebert, too, would improve his work if he would remember that a back's function is to clear first time and not dribble in his goal area. Both he and Fisher, however, did excellent work, as did the half back line, Lovell again showing excellent form, with his wing partners not far behind him in efficiency.

Southall soon began to press at the start. Following a corner, the ball came over from a throw-in on the left, and CLARE headed home neatly, to open the score. He netted again, following a free-kick, but this time was off-side. After about 20 minutes, however, some good inter-passing ended with CLARE scoring Southall's second.

Golders Green began to get into their stride more after this second reverse, and attacked strongly for a while. Shorland beat Brown and centred. Green dropped the ball and COCHRANE ran in and shot home. There was no further scoring before the interval.

On the resumption, with the wind behind them, Golders Green attacked continually, but could not find the net.

From a Shorland centre, Pulling shot straight at Green; then Welstead stopped a shot from Fontana on the goal line, with Green out of his charge. Shorland put a good shot in but it sailed outside the far post. Green saved from Stroud, Pulling put one outside and another to the goalie: Shorland hit the crossbar and put another straight at Green. Pulling failed to connect with a pass with an open goal and Fontana put a ball weakly at the goalie.

Sandwiched between all this were two Southall breakaways. Hart rushed out and gathered a centre with Clare on him, and then CLARE broke clean through and scored, leaving Hart helpless.

For a time the visitors appeared disheartened, but they came back. Stroud put over a nice ball, which Fontana put to PULLING, who easily beat Green, to bring the score [to] 2-3.

The Green piled on the pressure again. Welstead again cleared a Stroud centre with Green beaten; Shorland shot across the goal, just wide. Green conceded a fruitless corner, from Stroud's shot, and then Southall broke away. Munday cleared well, foilowing a corner, and Russell missed an easy chance before Green saved a long shot fro Bregaan.

This Saturday Golders Green will be at home to Walthamstow Avenue in the Herts and Middlesex League.
