Match Report

Before another large crowd at the Avenue Ground on Saturday Woolwich were defeated 4 goals to 1, the Town thereby securing the championship of the Premier Amateur Section of the London League and retaining their unbeaten certificate in the competition. This success gives Hampstead the right to meet the winners of the Professional Section (not yet decided) in a final match be played on the Arsenal ground at Highbury on the last day of the season. Matthews lost the toss, and a strong wind troubled the Town defence throughout the first half and played many extraordinary tricks with the ball. Woolwich secured ten corner kicks in as many minutes, but the Town kept their goal intact until Lucas accidentally handled in the penalty area. Dale, the visitors’ captain and smart right-winger scored a beautiful goal with resultant kick. The Town worked hard to remedy this set-back, and the Woolwich goal had a miraculous escape on several occasions, eventually capitulating when Spiller equalized for the Town, this completing the score at the interval. On resuming the Town and the wind led the visitors a merry dance, and it was not long before Tomkins gained the lead with a grand effort, the same player adding a further goal in double quick time. After Preece had scored a fourth, with the game well won, the Town forwards indulged in shooting, practice, and gave an exhibition of how it is possible not to score goals.
