Match Report

From the Hendon & Finchley Times, 30 March 1923 :

In the semi-final of the Middlesex Charity Cup Hampstead [Town] had an exciting game with Botwell Mission, and after holding the lead on three occasions were eventually beaten by five goals to four.

Wise did the hat trick and scored two of the goals in the first few minutes of the game. The home side equalised before half time, but on resuming Travers Day scored well, and after Botwell had restored the balance, Wise again put Hampstead ahead. The home side, however, played up strongly and scored twice, the last going through just on time.

From the West Middlesex Gazette, 31 March 1923 :

Botwell Mission had Hampstead Town as visitors in the semi-final of the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup last Saturday, and as was expected the 2,000 spectators were treated to some fine play. Both teams turned out as advertised. It was an exciting encounter with the issue in doubt almost until the final whistle. Botwell twice made up arrears and twice took the lead, eventually earning a well-deserved victory over their Athenian League opponents by the odd goal in nine. Hampstead kicked off and made ground, and in less than two minutes Ramsay miskicked and Wise scored. Not a minute passed before Butler got away on the right and crossed for Wise to notch number two with a nice header. The Mission at once got to business to reduce the deficit and the forwards got down and threatened danger time and again, Walker and Findlater getting nice swinging passes from F.C. Knight, and the Hampstead defence conceding several corners to save their charge, which, although well placed were not taken advantage of. Findlater at last centred perfectly and Bond, taking his time, placed the ball out of McCracken's reach. From the kick off F.C. Knight sent Bond through, but when in a perfect position he was fouled. Findlater gave McCracken no chance with the penalty kick. At this period of the game Botwell were very aggressive, and Hampstead had a hard task to stop them. Ten minutes before the breather "Sonny" Long headed the ball into the net via the post. Half-time : Botwell, 3 ; Hampstead, 2.

Immediately upon the resumption Hampstead put all they knew into the struggle, and were having more of the game, Wise leading several attacks with rare skill, and during a melee in front of Botwell's goal a misunderstanding between Pacey and Ramsay allowed Travers Day to push the ball through. At the other end Knight had hard luck with good attempts, but Hampstead were paying him a lot of attention so that although he kept his wings going well he was unable to score. Butler, on Hampstead's right, got away well on the right, seemingly owing to the fact that he was given too much rope by Weedon, and Wise headed Hampstead's fourth goal from Butler's centre. From this point to the end Botwell put up a series of hot attacks and Findlater beat Cantrell two or three times. Ten minutes from the end F.C. Knight again put Bond a fine pass and he headed the equaliser amidst much excitement. Still Botwell had more of the game, but being unable to finish the movements owing to the do or die methods employed by Hampstead until one minute from the end Walker beat all opposition and centred for Long to score the winning goal. It was a typical cup-tie struggle, and a lot of good football was sacrificed for high and aimless kicking. Botwell's attack had the Hampstead defence in a tangle many times. Ramsay played well in the Botwell defence, as did Sceeney, despite the fact that the latter twisted his knee half way through the second half. All the Botwell forwards did well, but Butler and Wise were the outstanding players in Hampstead's front line. Neither goalkeeper was to blame for the heavy score, both of them saving well on many occasions. Pacey played grandly in the closing stages and his aggressive work was good and his passes perfect. F.C. Knight is having bad luck with his shooting lately, and against Hampstead hit the "woodwork" three times.
