Match Report

Hampstead Town lost their London Senior Cup-tie with Dulwich Hamlet at Champion Hill on Saturday by one goal to nil, but the point was gained when Hampstead were battling bravely with ten men, R. Wardlaw, who had been playing as well as anyone, being forbidden to appear after the interval. Late in the first half he was brought down heavily by an opponent, and although with characteristic pluck he remained on the field until half-time it could be seen that he was feeling the effects of the accident. In the opinion of those nearby, Wardlaw was brought down unfairly, although the referee did not penalise the home side. Naturally, the absence of the capable left-half proved a severe handicap to Hampstead. Young, who captained the team, took the vacancy at half-back, and this had the effect of considerably weakening the forward line. Under the circumstances Hampstead may be congratulated on limiting the Hamlet's score to one goal.

The match was witnessed by a crowd of 7,000, a big contingent of the Hampstead supporters attending, and on the whole the game was much enjoyed. The pleasure, however, would have been greater had the referee not been called upon to use his whistle so freely. The home side adopted unnecessary offside tactics.

Young won the toss, but gave the home side the benefit of the slope in the first half. This was, we believe, a pre-arranged plan. The Hamlet also gained a little advantage from the wind. When play opened Irwin was prominent on Hampstead's wing and dropped across two good centres, but this was but a flash in the pan, Dulwich taking control of the game for some time. For a few minutes there was a continual barrage of the Hampstead goal, and one could not dispute the fact that the visitors were favoured with good fortune in keeping their charge intact. Under heavy pressure the backs played soundly, and Goodwin was applauded for some daring saves. In due course, however, Hampstead began to feel their feet, and made several incursions into the home territory. There were many good movements, Young being of much more assistance to Irwin than he has been in one or two recent games. From the right wing Smith was presented with an open goal, but to the discomfiture of the Hampstead supporters, the shot went wide. Later Smith had another opportunity, if not quite such an easy one, of opening the account but again he disappointed. Sweetman tested Williams with a terrific shot from a free kick from about 40 yards out, and the force of the ball may be gathered from the fact that the goalkeeper needed the attention of the ambulance men. Just before half-time Williams was also lucky in being able to save a shot from Young, the ball being tipped over the bar. Taking the first half throughout, play ruled in favour of Dulwich, and Hampstead did remarkably well in preventing them from scoring. Towards the close they were doing so well that hopes were entertained that Dulwich would be added to the long list of the season's victims.

When, however, it was found that Wardlaw would be unable to return to the field hopes dropped to zero. The Hamlet re-arranged their forward line, and this quickly proved effective, as within five minutes they had taken the lead through a goal scored by Russ, after Goodwin had saved from Davis. Play ruled fairly level, but even though they were meeting a depleted team Dulwich could not resist exploiting the one-back game. Naturally with Young dropping back to the half line much of Irwin's work was wasted, but he was distinctly unfortunate not to equalise the scores when he fell into the net in an endeavour to reach a centre from Smith. There were one or two other attempts, but long before the end it was evident that victory was secure for the Hamlet.
