Match Report

With the same team that had defeated Bromley by 3-1 Hampstead Town entertained Enfield on Saturday in the first preliminary round of the F.A. Cup and gained a big victory by seven goals to nil. A win was expected, but no one imagined that Enfield would go under in such decisive fashion. On the run of the play in midfield the margin in favour of Hampstead should not have been more than three goals, but whereas Enfield failed to make the most of their opportunities Hampstead did not allow many chances to go begging. The team was well-balanced, but if there was one line more than another where superiority was shown it was at half-back, the visiting trio failing to hold their own with Hampstead's clever line of forwards.

For the first twenty minutes Enfield appeared to have the best of the exchanges, and were somewhat unlucky in not finding the net on one or two occasions, Crowl, at outside-left, being constantly a source of danger. Ruskin, too, was very prominent, and with a less agile goalkeeper than Goodwin to face they must have been successful. At the end of twenty-five minutes Wardlaw scored following a corner that was nicely taken by Irwin, and after that Hampstead never looked in any danger of losing. While collaborating nicely with his colleagues Seabrooke made several solo dangerous efforts, and Young was frequently troubling Groves, the Enfield goalkeeper. The second goal came through Wise, Irwin materially helping him to get the ball in a shooting position. Just before crossing over Enfield's outside-right, A.J. Chapman, struck the crossbar after a centre by Crowl, and Hampstead players were regarded as fortunate in leaving the field with a clean sheet.

In the second half play ruled largely in favour of Hampstead. Quite early Dyson (right back) had the misfortune to put the ball through his own goal following a free kick, and a few minutes later Smith netted accurately when unmarked, the young outside-left being applauded, this being his first goal. Enfield, despite these reverses, never gave up hope, their forwards playing with rare dash and causing Goodwin to be always on the alert. One shot from Crowl was nicely tipped over the bar. Dangerously near the penalty line Young was fouled, but the free kick was not improved upon. However, it was not long before Wise scored the fifth goal; the sixth came off Edden (Enfield's centre-half) from a shot by Barnes, and the seventh and last goal must be placed to the credit of Wise (as brilliant as ever) although the ball actually went into the net off Thwaites, Hampstead's centre-half of two or three seasons back, who, after assisting Tufnell Park, is now wearing Enfield's colours.

Towards the end the Enfield defence seemed quite overwhelmed by the bustling home forwards.
