Match Report

Playing at home in the Athenian League on Monday, Hampstead [Town] scored one of their easiest victories on the season, defeating Cheshunt to the tune of 9-3. The first half saw a grand fight for honours and at the interval the score was one all, but after the change over Hampstead romped away. Cousins did the hat trick, and Wise, Rowe and Ashby each scored twice. There were several changes in both advertised teams. For Hampstead, S. Bloxham appeared at centre-half in place of Pease, who had not fully recovered from a strain caused in Saturday's match, and V.F. Rowe was centre-forward in place of H.W. Shearcroft. E.M. Lloyd, on the left wing, gave a fine performance. Cheshunt were without Haynes, Fox and Onions. G.W. Odell moved from right-half to take Haynes' place at centre-forward, his own place being filled by T. Carey. G. Aldridge played at inside-right and A. Deacon took the place of Onions at left-half.

Hampstead, who started without Ashby, soon forced a corner, following which Rowe, Wise and Lloyd each tested the visiting goalkeeper. Cheshunt attacked strongly until Lloyd eased matters with a brilliant run down the field, only to shoot wide owing to his speed. He soon proved a valuable winger, and was generally well fed. Cheshunt have speedy wingers in Harper and Halfhide, both of whom kept Goodwin busy at times, but it fell to Odell to open the score for Cheshunt. Hampstead now set the pace, and after Groves had punched over the bar for a corner, Rowe headed in to equalise. The Town maintained a regular bombardment upon the Cheshunt goal, which was only broken by two smart movements by the visitors, in each of which the home goal was in danger. Hampstead's backs did their work well and Goodwin brought off some clever saves.

After the change of ends Rowe added a second goal for Hampstead from a well-placed centre by Cousins, and soon after Cousins scored the third from a penalty kick for hands. Cheshunt again carried the game to the home end, and Goodwin was called out to deal with rapid shots which resulted in Odell raising the visitors' score. Within a few minutes Cousins found the net for Hampstead's fourth, and Smith replied with a third for Cheshunt. Wise scored a lucky fifth goal, the ball bouncing over Groves' head as he reached out to claim it. Cousins completed his hat trick, and Ashby scored twice in rapid succession, receiving useful centres from Cousins. Practically on time Wise scored the ninth goal for Hampstead.
