Match Report

Golders Green scored four times at Oxford on Saturday, but only three goals were theirs, Caswell being unlucky to place the fourth in his own net, and the result of the friendly was a win for Golders Green by 3-2.

Oxford City were not an impressive team, and in the second half the Golders Green attack was able to do pretty well as they liked; but this was not due entirely to weakness of the home side. Due credit must go to the three new or recent appearances in the Golders Green first team. They were A. McLean, a very promising centre-half, from the " A " side; R. Marsden, who played against Bromley last week and did a lot of good work on Saturday; and J. Lambie, who worked consistently well at centre-forward and scored all three goals for Golders Green. He is fast, after the ball all the time and knows where the goal lies.

Sexton was not in good form, and Davis appeared to be slow in the opening stages, but the latter soon warmed up to his work and displayed many pleasing touches.

From the kick-off Oxford made an early advance, but the shot from the left went behind, and Golders Green worked the ball through in the centre, Lambie passing out to F. Boston, who turned in a fine shot to the bottom corner of the goal, but Wyatt reached the ball. From the goal kick Guilfoyle sent Irving away, and he centred to Brookes, who was well-positioned. McLean went down in tackling the centre-forward, but Caswell cleared. Wickson recovered the ball, but shot wide.

Golders Green attacked on both wings in succession, but failed to penetrate, and when Oxford pressed again G. Davis forced a corner, without result.

At the other end Oxford survived two corners, and then the Golders Green goal had a narrow escape when Brookes got clean away and miskicked at close range. Wyatt held a shot from Boston and threw out from Lambie. Boston came again, but missed the mark.

The game was nearly 30 minutes old when Lambie opened the score as a result of a pretty piece of team work. Marsden headed the ball out to F. Boston, who made ground and centred to LAMBIE to put in a nice shot past the goalkeeper.

Oxford tried hard to equalise, but the best shot, from Brookes, was well cleared by Barlow. Close on half-time Lambie struck the upright and Wyatt saved from F. Boston.

Golders Green were the first to press after the change of ends, and Sexton put in a neat shot from near the corner, but Wyatt was ready for it. Oxford made some changes amongst their team, but this had no effect upon the play.

Golders Green attacked for considerable spells, but the Oxford rearguard cleared well until Lambie went through on his own to score the second goal. Wyatt ran out to meet the ball, but LAMBIE tapped it round him and went on to push the ball over the line for a simple, yet well-deserved goal.

Barlow was in action again after this, but after Oxford had forced a corner, from which Guilfoyle shot behind, Golders Green nearly scored their third, a miskick from Sexton spoiling the finish.

BROOKES, accepting a long pass from the left, found an easy opening and scored Oxford's first goal.

But Golders Green were soon attacking again, and Marsden was unlucky to shoot over the top from a centre by Breagan. Lambie beat the defence and finished with a clever left foot hook, but Wyatt held the shot.

Golders Green fell back and conceded a couple of corners, but Bucci cleared from one and F. Davis the other. McLean sent F. Boston away, and he tested Wyatt again with a terrific drive low down. Lambie got his head to a pass from Breagan, but headed over the top.

LAMBIE completed his hat-trick when he nipped out to the left wing, taking up the ball from F. Boston, and beat the defence in a brilliant individual effort, shooting in as Wyatt came out to narrow the angle. F. Boston came near to scoring a fourth, but the ball passed across the goalmouth, and though Lambie tried to turn it in, he was a fraction late. F. Davis came up to take a shot, and F. Boston forced another corner.

Close on time Oxford set up a stronger attack and Brookes shot. Barlow started out to reach the ball, but Caswell got there first and attempted to clear, but caught the ball on the wrong side of the boot and sent it through into the roof of the net, presenting Oxford with their second goal.
