Match Report

Opposed by a team of fine calibre, containing a large proportion of representative players, Golders Green, after scoring first and holding their own in the first half, were completely outplayed by Army Wanderers during the second period, and it was only due to fine defensive work that the score was kept as low as 6-1.

The Army side treated the crowd to a fine display of fast, constructive football, and thoroughly deserved their win.

Golders Green won the toss and, kicking with a strong wind in their favour, gradually settled down to good football. The Army had most of the play during the first ten minutes, McLean soon having to concede a corner with W. Boston beaten by Bootland. Vanner, however, shot wide from the centre, but the visitors came again and Vickers got through on the left: he put across to Bootland and Barlow saved for a corner, which Vanner headed just wide.

A short rally by Golders Green came to an end when Walker failed to reach a pass from Breagan, and then the Army went down the field with a splendid inter-passing movement. W. Boston was beaten, and Vickers put in a fine shot which Barlow did well to turn for a corner. From the kick, Golders Green again rallied, Sexton giving Breagan a good pass. His centre reached Walker, who put out to F. Boston, and Swinnerton saved well.

The Army went back into attack, and first Brown then Vickers put wide. Sexton made a good pass to Breagan, who beat Daniels and centred. The ball went to LONG, who put a good shot past Swinnerton to open the scoring after 20 minutes.

The home side had more of the play after this, the visiting goalkeeper having to deal with shots from Walker and Boston, while Bucci headed just wide from a centre. Breagan forced a corner, which was safely cleared, and after a short burst of attacking by the Army, Walker forced a corner, from which Long shot wide. The goal kick went to Breagan, but he put yards over the bar.

The visitors then took up the running for a while, Walshaw and Bootland combining well, the latter putting the ball right across the goal, and Vanner shooting over from a couple of yards out. Another good move saw W. Boston and McLean well beaten, but Barlow made a fine save and Caswell cleared out of danger. Just before the interval Golders Green had another spell on the offensive, and Swinnerton saved well from Sandrock.

Right from the opening of the second half it was obvious that the wind had played a big part in keeping Golders Green in the picture. The soldiers were continuously dangerous, and were playing as strongly through the closing stages as they were at the start.

From the kick-off they got on terms. A good passing movement saw W. Boston and McLean completely outwitted and Brown, gaining possession, put to VANNER, who slammed in a magnificent shot which gave Barlow no chance. Within a quarter of an hour the Army were ahead. A movement started on the left and they went right down the field : a grand centre to WALSHAW, and the Army had scored again.

Two minutes later they clinched the issue. Mudford got the ball on the move, Vanner beat Bucci, and some grand combined work led to WALSHAW netting the third goal. The visitors continued to attack and forced a corner, which was put right across the goal. Bootland shot, and the ball cannoned on to W. Boston, from whom it rebounded into the net. This was after 20 minutes' play.

Some positional changes in the home side stopped the rot for a while. F. Boston and Long changed places, while Breagan went to left-half and Sandrock to outside-right. The Army, however, continued on the attack. Barlow turned a shot from Vickers for a corner - a fine save low down - and then Caswell failed to boot clear, but Walshaw shot over.

Good work by Long and Sandrock enabled the home side to gain a corner, which was cleared, and then Sexton put in a shot which Swinnerton just saved. The home rally did not last long, and soon the Army forwards were swarming round the home goal. One shot hit the post and Barlow made two fine clearances, following which he had to save twice before Golders Green got on the move, Walker going right through, but Long was just too late in shooting. The home goal was subjected to heavy pressure, and finally BANHAM booted in across the goal to make the score 1-5 after 40 minutes. The last goal came just on time. The visitors went clean through the home defence, and VICKERS scored from close in.

Golders Green's side was depleted by the fact that Davis was unable to play owing to business calls and Webster was injured. But these two players would have made no difference to the overall result, as the Army side showed football far above Athenian class. The game was, however, a most enjoyable one, played in a clean sporting manner, and producing at times some first-rate football.
