Golders Green's Middlesex Senior Cup replay at Hayes produced only one goal, but was a thoroughly well-deserved victory and gives Golders Green the right to meet Hoxton Manor on March 4, with - if they are successful - a contest with Finchley in the semi-final.
Golders Green's goal came midway through the first half, Thomas making good use of a perfect forward pass from Owen, following one of the best demonstrations of team work Golders Green have produced this season. The whole team gave a good display, except for weakness on the part of Coppola, though he did have his big moments.
There was much better understanding between the halves and forwards and more of the hard kicking that has been needed by the Golders Green defence, while passes " found the man " more generally than has been the case in recent games.
Button deputised for Graves at centre-half and gave a very pleasing performance, showing thought and intelligent anticipation in all his work. The only other change from the team announced was due to the absence of Ellison, Coppola coming in at inside-right, where he did not prove support enough for Breagan. Owen, at inside-left, did a lot of useful work, and Thomas played a great game in the centre. Lovell and W. Boston were in good form, and Barlow played a strikingly cool game between the posts.
For Hayes, Johnson returned at right-half - and did not make a very notable return - while Haydon, who has shown good form as a half-back for the Reserves, was introduced at inside-left.
Hayes had the wind and the sun behind them at kick-off and started off strongly, with long accurate passes and speedy wing work; but Button and the backs gave nothing away and Hayes soon showed a tendency to quieten down. Barlow was reached once, following a free-kick, but it was not a moment of real danger, and when Golders Green got into stride they nearly took the lead through a movement started by Breagan. He passed back to Lovell, who swung the ball across to Owen, and he put Thomas through. Greygoose ran out and Thomas shot past him, but had bad luck in placing the ball wide. A somewhat similar movement started by Bucci led to close work around the Hayes goal, but the forwards became too bunched together, and the attack ended with the goalie picking up from a weak shot by Breagan.
Hayes left wing broke away, but only forced a corner off Barlow, who fell in saving from Friday, who had taken up the ball from Marchant and gone through on his own. From the corner kick, Chudley headed over the bar.
Golders Green replied with a corner, and from Breagan's kick, Coppola headed too high.
Hayes were not well together now, and Golders Green were taking more of the game. Both wings were working well, and once Coppola looked like scoring, running in to meet a long pass from Breagan, but Greygoose reached the ball first.
Hayes attacked again, and Ward struck the crossbar with a free-kick taken from just outside the penalty area. Next, Marchant shot across the goalmouth, and a momentary confusion between Caswell and Barlow nearly led to a goal.
Twenty-five minutes had passed when Golders Green scored. Breagan passed the ball over to Owen, who pushed it forward to the centre, and THOMAS beat the goalie as he ran out to meet him.
Thomas was showing an almost uncanny ability in slipping through the defence and always avoiding offside, and his goal was a well-merited award. He might have added to the lead before half-time, but there were considerable stretches when he was left to play a lone hand.
Golders Green were clearly on top of the game towards the interval. There were some ineffectual raids by Hayes, but Golders Green were the aggressors, and they looked like scoring again when Thomas, well-placed, took a centre from Coppola, but shot wide of the posts. Close on [half-]time Hayes woke up and Friday came near equalising. Served by Reeves, he went through on his own and shot, but Barlow pushed the ball out.
After the interval the wind had dropped a bit, but Hayes had to face the sun. They made a spirited re-opening, but poor finishing spoilt their best attacks, and it was not long before Golders Green were pressing again. Bucci, off F. Boston, put in a nice long shot, and Breagan, accepting a pass from Thomas, looked a certain scorer, but a corner resulted. F. Boston reached Greygoose with a first-timer off a long pass by Breagan, and then Coppola and Breagan forced another corner, from which the ball was scrambled clear.
Hayes tried to find a way through in the centre, but Button and Bucci held them, and when play was transferred to the left wing Marchant shot wide after being presented with a rare scoring chance. Hayes were playing Friday too much, for he was well marked. They might have done more through Farrow, but many of the passes out to this wing were badly timed.
Breagan, full of life in spite of some nasty falls, made a lot of impression on the home defence, though he was often the best marked man on the field. He could trick two or three defenders together and get his centre through to Thomas, who deserved another goal midway through this half by some brilliant solo work.
There were some fast exchanges and end-to-end play, but Hayes had gone right off form, and Golders Green were " showing them how."
Bad luck threatened Golders Green when Button was injured and had to leave the field, but he was soon on again and there had been no particularly dangerous developments.
Hayes gained a corner through the efforts of Marchant, and from the kick the ball was headed to the crossbar, but rebounded into play and was cleared away. Hayes made a strong fight to equalise before the end, and Barlow had more work to do, but nothing more than a few corners resulted, and when Golders Green went into action again Greygoose had to hold a shot from Owen, and a sledge-hammer one from F. Boston sc raped over the crossbar.
Close on time Hayes made another spirited attack, and Barlow had to push the ball up, conceding a corner, but from this the ball was cleared.
