Match Report

Golders Green's winning performance on Saturday will long be remembered by the 5,000 people who saw the F.A. Cup match at Claremont Road. From the start Golders Green played better than the previous week, but they lost many opportunities in the first half through slowness and gave two goals away - one through a fault by Caswell and the other by Ward handing in the penalty area.

Ward was slow, but in his defence it must be said that he was far from fit, suffering from a bad cold or influenza. Long was a weak link in the first half, and Coppola failed to take advantage of many openings worked for b y Breagan and Brown.

Approaching half-time, Barnet were leading by two clear goals, an advantage which was not really deserved on the run of play. Then Golders Green scored, and the goal changed them into a new team. Where they had been out-positioned and frequently out-run, they now became a force to be reckoned with, and after the interval they drove Barnet back in sensational style. The crowds in the stands waved, shouted and stamped while the Golders Green whirlwind shattered the visiting defence, and it might almost be said that the home team were shouted to victory. Certainly they had all the vocal encouragement a team could desire, and the uproarious enthusiasm was well deserved. It was all Golders Green in this half, and the men who had been weakest in the first half - Coppola and Long, scored the goals which Brought Golders Green up to the next stage in the competition.

Golders Green fielded the same team which was defeated by Barnet in the Athenian League, but Breagan and Long changed places, while B arnet were again without Finch, Norman Davey deputising on the left wing.

The match was only nine minutes old when MacFARLANE opened the scoring for Barnet. Barlow had cleared a shot, but MacFarlne brought the ball in again and Caswell miskicked [not Barlow as in printed report], giving the centre-forward an easy chance with which he could make no mistake.

Golders Green raided the visitors' territory without success, mainly through weakness on the right wing and through Coppola finishing poorly after brilliant foraging by Brown. At the other end Barlow brought off a marvellous save, going down to smother the ball on Davey's foot after the winger had swerved cleverly past Graves and W. Boston. Bucci played well to bring the ball through to the Golders Green forwards again, but weakness in front of goal was again evident. Brown took up a well-judged pass from Graves, made ground and centred, Breagan getting his head to the ball, but Kimber cleared and McCarthy passed out to Davey, who shot close across the home goal and forced the first corner of the game.

This led to Ward handling, and JORDAN netted with the penalty shot, giving Barnet their two-goal lead after 35 minutes of play.

Barnet's defence now seemed absolutely rock-like, but practically on half-time Brown centered from a throw-in, Long headed and struck the upright. BREAGAN got the ball from the rebound and smashed in a first-timer from five yards range, giving Golders Green the goal which changed their fortunes.

Kelleher had been the main thorn in the side of the home defence, while the Barnet half-backs were constructive and practically impassable.

After the change of ends, however, Golders Green's defence proved more than equal to the speedy visiting forwards, while the Green's forward line, well supported by the halves, crashed their way through the Barnet rearguard time after time, threw the half-backs into confusion and gave Kimber one of the busiest afternoons he has had for a long time. The scheming of Kelleher, the distribution work of McCarthy and the man-finding passes of the whole Barnet side counted for naught. Golders Green were seen at their best, and when Coppola brought the scores level after Kimber had saved a point-blank shot, there was no doubt that Golders Green could win, time being the only factor.

Kimber's clearance was from COPPOLA, who found himself alone in front of the goal. The centre-forward trapped the ball neatly from the clearance and drove it in again, leaving Kimber well beaten.

Barnet, though no longer the attacking force, raided the home area frequently, but the strength was now with the home defence, mainly inspired by Graves, who broke up nearly all dangerous movements, while W. Boston and Caswell saw to it that the forwards had no time for steady shooting.

Breagan nearly gave Golders Green the lead, but had bad luck with his shot, though he forced a corner. A bombardment of the Barnet goal followed, and excitement ran at fever height. Only offside prevented Breagan scoring again, and Coppola also went near with a fine shot off F. Boston. Breagan got in another cross-shot, low down and Kimber dropped the ball, but it rolled harmlessly across the goalmouth and Coppola was unable to reach it for the tap in that was wanted.

One dangerous moment came for Golders Green when Graves was knocked out. He lay semi-conscious while the Barnet forwards swept on, but W. Boston intercepted a pass from Davey and put the ball out of play.

Then came Long's winning goal. A high pass from Ward started it. Long centred to Coppola, who was tackled and passed out to F. Boston. He swung the ball back to the far side of goal and LONG slipped in to give the final shot. It was a fine piece of work and a well-merited goal, ten minutes from the final whistle.

A fast and exciting pace was maintained to the end, but Barnet were outplayed, and it would not have been surprising to see Golders Green add to their lead.

This game took toll of several Golders Green men by way of injury. Brown was badly winded. Graves was shaken by his knock-out, Coppola suffered from a cut over the eye, and close on time F. Boston was injured and had to be carried from the field.
