Match Report

Golders Green won the F.A. Cup replay through a greeat shot from F. Boston seven minutes from the close of the game at Wealdstone. Wealdstone scored first, Breagan equalised, and level terms were held until it seemed that extra time must be played.

But Boston's shot gave Golders Green the right to meet Barnet at home on October 15.

Graves won the toss and set Golders Green to play with the wind, which was straight down the field. From the kick-off Baldwin tried to make an opening in the centre, but W. Boston robbed him and pushed forward to Hill, who swung the ball out to Breagan. The movement failed, and at the other end Graves cleared from Potts and headed back for Boston to clear when pressed by Bunce.

Golders Green forced a corner, well placed by F. Boston, and Brown got his head to the ball, but it landed in the goalkeeper's hands - a lucky escape.

A long shot across from Gaze nearly beat Barlow, but he reached the ball and was fouled, the kick clearing the pressure for a time. Golders Green gained ground through another free-kick, but Bucci finished by a wide shot, and Wealdstone attacked again on the right, Caswell clearing from Gaze.

A moment later Caswell miskicked and let Gaze through, BUNCE taking up his centre to score a good goal with a ground shot eight minutes from the start.

A long pass forward by Hill brought Walker far out to pick up the ball before Brown could reach it, and from a free-kick placed neatly by Ward, Long drove wide in trying to penetrate a massed defence.

Wealdstone's right wing came into action again, and Barlow had to run out to clear. Hill tried to engineer an opening from Brown, but offside intervened.

At once Wealdstone got away and Baldwin broke through. Barlow ran out and missed the ball, but Graves and W. Boston slipped back to stop Baldwin right in front of goal. It was a close shave for the Green.

Wealdstone's combination was beautiful to watch, but the forwards allowed themselves to be caught offside, which ruined some of the best efforts.

Gaze forced Graves to concede a corner, and Barlow fisted the ball out. He also held from Potts, and then Wilson headed wide off Gaze.

The equaliser for Golders Green crowned a movement started by Ward. Hill took up his forward pass and transferred to BREAGAN. The winger shot once, caught the ball on the rebound off a back and went in to finish off, with not a chance for the goalkeeper. There were nine minutes to go for the interval. Close on time F. Boston broke away and sent in a swift low shot which Walker saved at full length on the ground.

Golders Green were trying better as the interval approached, and there were close shots by Ward and F. Boston and a fruitless corner from which Loveday cleared.

Half-time, 1-1.

After the change of ends Long moved to centre-forward, Brown inside-left and Hill inside-right. The weather had changed, and Golders Green were facing a strong sun. Early on F. Boston took a free-kick rather close in. This was blocked, and Bucci, who took the ball on the rebound, shot wide of the posts. At the other end Barlow did well (with the sun in his eyes) to hold from a free-kick, and from his clearance Gaze struck the [out]side of the net. Barlow brought off a wonderful save when he scrambled on hands and knees to reach a ground shot from Bunce.

A corner brought Golders Green no advantage, and after weak attacks bt both wings Golders Green fell back, Wilson going very near with a low shot across the visitors' goal.

Golders Green came back again, and Loveday played well to clear from Hill and Long, but Golders Green were losing their chances by playing the ball into the air or dribbling about. Brown was about the only one really keeping the ball going.

Down the field again Bunce struck the Golders Green crossbar with a second attempt after Barlow had fisted the ball out from his first shot.

Golders Green had one good chance - a combined effort by Brown and Boston, but the shot went wide.

Seven minutes from the end Friday faulted to let F. BOSTON through, and he scored the winning goal with a lovely shot into the far corner of the net.
