Match Report

Golders Green played a good game under bad conditions at Redhill on Saturday, and would undoubtedly have taken both Athenian League points but for the unfortunate injury to R. Thomas which put him out of the game for the whole of the second half, after he had scored both the visitors' goals.

With the exception that Marrable deputised for Evans at inside-left, Golders Green fielded a full team, and they were superior to Redhill almost throughout the first half, but the high wind spoiled much of the finer football in the early stages and driving rain added to the difficulties.

Redhill made two last-minute changes, F. Francis coming in at centre-half instead of E.D. Colwell, and W. J. Allison taking the left-half berth in place of F. Hewitt.

Redhill won the toss and put Golders Green to face the wind and rain, but the visitors opened strongly and Lovell got the ball out to Breagan, who made ground and centred well. Thomas, met by Francis, winged the ball again but placed it too far up for Breagan. Long kicking by the Redhill halves transferred play to the visitors' end, and after Graves and W. Boston had been forced to pass the ball back for Barlow to clear, Redhill gained a corner. Graves cleared the ball, but immediately afterwards Barlow was reached and fell as he went for the ball. He held it, but injured a hand in the process.

Redhill came again, and Faggetter missed badly after getting right through on his own.

A spell of end-to-end play followed, and there were some promising moves between F. Boston and Marrable, but Redhill were putting a lot of pressure on the Green defence, their wings not being well enough marked.

From a free-kick taken by F. Boston almost from the corner, Bucci shot through.

Thomas turned the ball to Ellison, who headed into the goalkeeper's hands, and, securing the ball again, Thomas shot high over. At the other end Hale was unlucky to miss with a good shot.

Golders Green's next attack, led by F. Boston, brought the opening goal 23 minutes from the kick-off. Boston made an opening for Thomas, who reached the ball a fraction late, but a corner was gained, and Boston placed the ball beautifully for THOMAS to head in under the bar. He caught the ball on his temple and was badly dazed.

At once Redhill ran away with the ball for O'CONNOR to equalise. A minute later Breagan nearly put the Green ahead again with a header off F. Boston's centre, and a little later Boston shot over when well served by Marrable.

Hale and Tennant led strong attacks for Redhill, but Lovell got the Green forwards away again, and Marrable headed over from a free-kick by F. Boston. Two corners for the Green followed, and then Breagan sent the ball in for Ellison to serve a short pass to THOMAS, who accepted a golden opportunity and gave Golders Green the lead again after 35 minutes play.

Faggetter netted again, but was offside. Thomas was suffering from his shaking when he headed the first goal, and near time he changed places with F. Boston.

Half-time arrived with the Green holding their lead of 2-1.

Golders Green played the second half without Thomas, who was suffering from concussion, while Redhill switched Boatwright to centre-forward in place of Faggetter. Ellison took Thomas's place. Redhill forced the pace at the outset, but Boatwright shot high over the bar and Barlow fisted the ball out for a corner.

Ellison, taking up from Breagan, nearly got through at the other end, but was brought down in front of goal, and although the Green got a corner, this brought no result. A long free-kick by W. Boston reached the penalty area and F. Boston connected with it, but hit the side of the net.

The Green were putting up a good show with only four forwards, but were forced back and Barlow brought off a grand save from Martin and also held one from Boatwright. Soon afterwards Boatwright had bad luck in scraping the ball over the bar.

Redhill were attacking strongly again when F. Boston, who was doing a lot of half-back work, was injured in falling. He had to be carried from the field and the visitors were reduced to nine, but he soon came on again.

Graves nearly let his side down when, a few feet from goal, he headed down to Barlow and missed his direction, but the ball rolled outside the posts. At the other end F. Boston headed neatly off a centre from Breagan, but Uwins held it.

Golders Green survived two corners, but from a third FRANCIS headed in to place Redhill on level terms with seven minutes to go. Fred Boston looked like restoring the visitors' lead, but Uwins held well, and Bucci failed with a likely shot.

In the closing minutes there was hard pressure around the Golders Green goal.
