Match Report

Golders Green have a good front line now, and the strength brought to the centre-forward position by Thomas was evident in the second half of Saturday's match against Leyton in the Athenian League. Ellison and Owen, the inside men, gave a good account of themselvers, the latter sharing the scoring honours with Thomas and Breagan. F. Boston, who has been the subject of some criticism, should be able to put this right now he finds he can rely on better efforts in the middle, but Breagan is still the most persistent winger, never losing a chance to go after the ball and never tiring, no matter how keen the pace.

Lovell, who, with Ellison, was ineligible for the game with Hayes, returned to right-half on Saturday and gave a good display, while Bucci also did some good work, but Graves was again the vital man in breaking up the Leyton attacks. Barlow's work in goal was deserving of high praise.

Leyton had some last minute changes, Hunt moving from right-half to left back owing to the absence of J. Watson, and Barnes dropping back from the forward line to fill the gap at right-half, while A. Avery came in at inside-right.

The game was fast and keen in spite of the being no score in the first half, but in the later stages, when Leyton were losing, tempers became frayed and the referee had twice to intervene between players to quell incidents which might have led to trouble.

Leyton's right wing went into action from the kick-off, and from a centre Charlton shot, but put no force behind it. Harden tried to get Smith away, but Caswell brought off a long clearance and Owen passed the ball on to Thomas, but the Leyton goalkeeper came out and reached it first. Golders Green were found with a gap in the defence, and Smith got through, but Barlow saved well and play was quickly transferred to the other end again, where Gibbs dashed out to fling himself into a mix-up and take the ball almost off Breagan's boot.

Golders Green's backs were lying too far up the field at times, and Graves was the only barrier between Leyton and the goalkeeper if a long pass forward brought a sudden breakaway.

Breagan and Ellison worked well together, and from Breagan's centre Thomas found the net, but was offside. He tried to make up for this a few moments later, but shot just wide of the posts. Barlow was tested by Evans before Golders Green's next attack. Then a pass from Ellison found F. Boston well-placed, but he missed the net, and from the goal-kick Leyton's right wing got away. Smith put across a grand centre, but Barlow saved point-blank from Charlton. A corner resulted, but this was cleared, and soon afterwards Charlton shot over the top after a spectacular breakaway by Cameron - a poor finish to a good effort. Barnes also skied the ball.

So far Leyton were the better team - always having their men well placed and showing good understanding and keen anticipation, but weak finishing robbed them off the lead they should have established before the interval.

Golders Green also had their chances and should have scored when Graves put Owen in possession and he winged the ball to Breagan, who made ground and centred well, but Thomas headed the ball wide. Again Breagan took a long pass across from Boston and returned it smartly to the centre, but Thomas was unlucky to head over the bar.

Further raids by Leyton were mostly inspired by the left wing, and Barlow brought off two grand saves from Charlton after good work by Cameron and Evans. Near half-time Barlow was injured, but he was able to carry on after receiving attention.

The interval arrived with no score, and Leyton opened with a rush in the second half, but failed to force a goal. Then the Golders Green halves pushed the game forward, and for a short time the Green were all round the visitors' goal, but could not penetrate. F. Boston reached the goalkeeper twice and also gave Thomas a golden chance with a long pass finely placed, but Thomas was put off by Gentry as he shot.

Leyton took the lead through AVERY, who beat the defence on his own and shot easily into the net, but within ten minutes the equaliser came, as a result of nice work between Breagan and Thomaas, BREAGAN finishing off after Thomas had drawn Gibbs out from the posts.

Golders Green were now swinging the ball about well, finding their men better, and the halves and the forwards showed a much better understanding. They went ahead when Boston took the ball down the wing and passed to Thomas, who was tackled and tapped it out to Breagan. He placed the ball well for OWEN to shoot for Golders Green's second goal.

Two minutes later BREAGAN netted the third, heading in off a beautiful centre from Boston.

Golders Green attacked for long stretches, but Leyton were still dangerous and they reduced the lead through Smith. Charlton went through, but was stopped by W. Boston and passed out to SMITH, who scored quite a good goal. But Golders Green were now in winning form, and there was no surprise when THOMAS, who was always well placed and on the alert, found an opening to give Golders Green their fourth and the last goal of the match.

Leyton made great efforts in the closing stages, but the home defence was their equal, while Golders Green came near to adding to their winning margin.
