Match Report

After playing their League fixtures with very moderate success, Golders Green suddenly recovered some of their true form on Saturday, when they defeated Wood Green Town, at Claremont Road, by 3 goals to 2, in the first round of the London Senior Cup.

The green started with only nine men, but for the opening stages they more than held their own against their fast opponents.

With the arrival of the rest of their players the Green seemed, surprisingly, to lose some of their initiative, and for a while the Town dominated the play.

But Golders Green had a rock-like defence which was to stand them in good stead later on, and both W. Boston and Bucci relieved the situation when their goal was in danger.

Quickly the play swung to the other end, and Coleman, on the left, tested Stanbridge with a fast drive. Soon after the Green had the ball in the net but Pulling was adjudged off-side. A few minutes later the same player captured the ball and sent a hot shot flashing towards the corner of the goal, but Stanbridge touched the ball and deflected it for a corner.

Hardly had the corner been taken when the fortunes of the game changed dramatically.

Bennett, Wood Green's centre forward, gathered the ball near the centre and began to make his way towards Hart in the Green goal. When he was challenged by F. Boston he slipped the ball through to Halle on the left wing. HALLE darted between the backs and put Wood Green one up with a low shot into the net.

Nothing daunted, however, the home side fought back doggedly and Stroud forced a fruitless corner.

Golders Green continued to attack and about ten minutes from the interval they had secured the equaliser. McGuire was fouled within the penalty area and the Green were awarded a spot kick, which F. BOSTON banged into the goal.

After the restart the Green took the offensive and Stanbridge was kept busy defending his goal.

Nevertheless, after sustained pressure, Wood Green eventually wilted, and McGuire, with a fine touch of opportunism, put the Green ahead. F. Boston put over a perfect centre, and although Stanbridge managed to reach the ball it slipped from his hands. McGUIRE was standing well back but he immediately seized his chance and dashed through to bundle the ball into the goal.

Golders Green were only saved by their staunch defence and the Town's inability to shoot fast and accurate. Among a defence which was striving desperately to keep its goal intact, Hart was prominent. It seemed that he must be beaten when Bennett sent a fast curving drive just under the bar, but Hart managed to reach the ball and punch it over for a corner.

The ball was cleared after a hot tussle near the goalmouth, but Wood Green swept again to the attack, and Hart saved from Joyce, Bennett and Ford in quick succession.

W. Boston was knocked unconscious for a few minutes when overwhelmed by Wood Green's left wing, but he was soon on the field again and saved from Joyce by kicking out of touch.

But the Town's determination was ultimately rewarded and Halle scored the equaliser. A Wood Green forward kicked the ball at Hart, who could not hold it, and HALLE had no difficulty in tapping the ball into the net.

Neither side seemed particularly dangerous, and just as extra time seemed inevitable, Golders Green scored the all-important goal following a masterly Cochrane-Coleman-Stroud movement.

Cochrane secured the ball just in Wood Green's half and sent it over to Coleman on the left. Coleman ran down and centred to STROUD, who was standing nearly on the goal-line, and he converted, to win the match for the Green.
