Match Report

Golders Green, the "home" team in the Herts & Middlesex League game last Saturday, after twice holding the lead, had to admit defeat by 4 goals to 2. Conditions were bad and play was at times difficult to follow, but there seemed no excuse for Golders Green's second half defensive lapses.

Both sides made changes from their advertised XI's. Tufnell Park played H. Munday in goal, moved A. Williams to inside left, and brought in Sibthorpe at right half [ not left half as in the printed report.] Golders Green, with R. Gallacher unfit, played his brother F. Gallacher at left back, and A. Munday at left half.

Golders Green had the better of the opening exchanges and their forwards seemed livelier than of late. Gallacher at left back gave a satisfactory display, making some good first time clearances, but the outstanding defender for the Green was Sealey, who played a strong game at centre half, especially when under pressure during the later stages of the game. Most of the trouble for Golders Green came from the Park's left-winger Murray, who had a field day ; Fisher gave him far too much rope and seemed unable to keep him in check. There was a lack of finesse about Golders Green's play, which gave the impression that as a team they had never taken the trouble to consider the finer points of the game. They were too slow, their play was crude, and they showed little or no team understanding. Positional play and marking was often bad and, particularly in the second half, the inside forwards, clever though they were, played too far back. A minimum of four forwards up is necessary for goal scoring.

Tufnell Park in contrast were a lively and vigorous side, and, when they got on top in the second half, showed themselves capable of really good football. On this display, they earned their victory.

After Brown, who made a most promising debut, had given Pulling a good chance, and H. Munday had saved from Goodchild, Mitchell passed to BROWN who gave Golders Green the lead with a well-placed shot. Beuschier got through, but McCann saved well. Then the Tufnell Park goal had two narrow escapes, Lynch, a sterling defender, finally heading a shot from Goodchild for a corner.

Tufnell Park got on terms when MURRAY shot home, but soon afterwards nice play by Mitchell and Brown enabled PULLING to restore the lead for Golders Green. Half time came with the score -- Golders Green 2, Tufnell Park 1.

Soon after the interval, Murray got away and centred ; McCann slipped as he came out and the ball was sent across for WILSON to equalise.

Golders Green had bad luck when a shot from Mitchell hit the base of the upright with H. Munday beaten, while Mitchell soon afterwards gave Pulling a good pass, but he could not control his shot. At this stage Goodchild was injured and left the field for attention. Tufnell Park again attacked on the left, and with Golders Green standing still appealing for an obvious off-side, which the referee did not allow, BEUSCHIER gave the Park the lead.

From this point, Golders Green seemed to lose all their fight. The defence was at sea, while the forwards were not up to press home attacks. Goodchild returned, but Fisher then had to receive attention and finished the game at outside right. Then Penn got through ; McCann came out, but was unable to gather and the ball was sent across to MURRAY who shot into an empty net to give Tufnell Park their fourth goal.
