Golders Green, playing with a depleted side due to holidays etc., visited Sutton for their opening Athenian League game of the season on August 25, and found themselves facing what is undoubtedly one of the strongest amateur sides of the day.

The Green flattered to deceive, for in the early stages they had the Sutton defence guessing and the home attack was well subdued. After a quarter of an hour, STROUD converted a corner well taken by Fair, to give the Greens the lead, and 10 minutes later, GRIFFITHS scored, at the second attempt, from Cochrane's pass to put the visitors two up.

Here, however, Golders Green's success ended; Sutton gradually settled down and took up the running; PRATT's goal, after half an hour, was well deserved. Roberts, apparently impeded by the sun, came out too far and the ball dropped just too high for him; he could only tip it into the net.

This reward put Sutton on their mettle, and they were beginning to call the tune. After Griffiths had put a good effort just wide at one end, and Young had hit the cross-bar at the other, a mix-up in the visiting defence let Sutton through. Fisher made a great effort by coming across, but could not get the ball away; VAUGHAN gained possession and equalised after 40 minutes. Immediately afterwards, Sutton took the lead. Roberts was unable to gather a ball from Pratt, and LAWES scored. Half-time came with the position Sutton 3, Golders Green 2.

After the interval, though they had the sun and wind in their favour, the Green fell to pieces. Their kicking was aimless and the play lacked cohesion, while Sutton gathered speed and confidence as the game progressed; they were much faster on the ball, their movements were well conceived and executed, while the kicking of their defenders was an object lesson.

Six minutes after half-time, LAWES made it 4; ten minutes CRISP got right through on his own, for the 5th; PRATT got the 6th after 35 minutes, and YOUNG completed the scoring a couple of minutes later.

The Green, for whom in extenuation, it must be said that Lloyd received a kick just before half-time, slowing him down, and Stroud, in the second half, appeared to be limping on the wing, never gave up trying, but, in spite of several late rallies, the home defence was never seriously extended.
