Today’s look back on this day in history, 25th January, begins in 1913 when Hampstead Town took on Waltham in a Middlesex League Premier Division fixture and won 5-1. With ‘Chummy’ Parker, a member of the Hendon Legends side that took part in the virtual match back in May, at right-half, Town won the game 5-1. Four goals in the first half from Henry Pennifer (2), Gordon Marchant and Ollie Sumner were added to after the break by George Garlick.

Six years later, in the aftermath of World War I and as the League of Nations were founded, a hat-trick from Harry Thurman and a goal from Dennis Bullough saw Town to a 4-0 win against Great Western Railway in the London United Senior League before in 1930 Staines Town were beaten 3-2 in the Middlesex Senior Cup thanks to a couple of goals from Freddie Evans and one from Bill Butland.

Evans’ namesake Tommy also netted twice six years later in 1936 in a 4-1 Middlesex Senior Cup win over Wood Green Town, Mike Fallon and Johnny Browne added the other two goals. Golders Green scored four once again in 1941 in the Herts & Middlesex County League against Slough Town, the Rebels, however, netted half a dozen of their own in the wartime thriller. Bill Boston with a rare goal, Billy Breagan, Ted Owen and ‘Mac’ Cochrane scored the Green goals.

It was back to Middlesex Senior Cup action in 1947 as Wealdstone were beaten 2-1 at Lower Mead thanks to a Denis Russell brace before Woking came to Claremont Road in 1958 in the Amateur Cup and beat the Greens 3-1, Jimmy Quail with Hendon’s consolation.

Wealdstone became the first of four opponents to be played twice on this day in 1964 as David Hyde and Paul Warnes’ goals failed to prevent the Greens from slipping to a 3-2 defeat – again in the Middlesex Senior Cup – as The Beatles claimed their first US number 1 with I Want To Hold Your Hand.

Woking became the second opponent to be played twice on this day five years later and were comfortably beaten 3-0 thanks to strikes from Paul Collett, Bobby Wilson and substitute Alan Dafforn then in 1975 a local Middlesex Senior Cup derby against Harrow Borough ended goalless at Earlsmead.

Slough were the next returnees in 1977 as Hendon won an Isthmian League match 2-0 with Alan Campbell and John Butterfield scoring the goals before another goalless draw at Claremont Road, this time against Leytonstone-Ilford in the league in 1983.

Three years later in 1986 a visit to Gander Green Lane ended in defeat, Mick Kiely’s goal unable to stop the Greens from slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Sutton United. A 1992 fixture against the same side, this time at Claremont Road, ended with the Greens suffering a 6-0 hiding at the hands of the rampant Amber and Chocolates.

Things were only half as bad five years later as Enfield, who had just spent tens of thousands of pounds on new signings Lee Endersby and Leroy May in pursuit of the title, came to Claremont Road and cantered to a 3-0 win and Endersby came to the fore in 2003 as with the Greens 3-1 down against rock bottom Hampton & Richmond Borough at Claremont Road, he came off the bench on his Hendon debut to score twice and salvage an unlikely point. Ricci Crace had earlier scored the other Hendon goal.

A 2005 visit to Yeading in the Middlesex Senior Cup ended in another defeat for Gary Farrell’s charges. Mark Nicholls and Eugene Ofori scored for the Greens however the ‘Ding won comfortably enough 4-2.

Six years later as protestors began to take to the streets in Egypt during on the ‘Day of Revolt’ a Jamie Busby strike saw a visit to Margate in the league end all-square, the Greens happy to return to London with a point from their winter trip to the season.

In total 18 matches have been played to date on 25th January of which 7 have been won, four drawn and 7 in defeat. 37 goals have been scored and 36 conceded.
