Episode number 12 of our retrospective look back at games on this day in history takes in the mildly successful date of 18th January where, following an awayday heavy day yesterday, the split is slightly more even.

Goals from Vic Hough, Gordon Marchmant and Henry Pennifer helped Hampstead Town to a 3-1 London League win over Waltham in 1913 and in one of the first games hastily arranged post-World War 1 Barnet were humbled 6-1 at the Avenue Ground thanks, in part, to a hat-trick from Charlie Allwright. T Poltock scored twice and W Saunders the other goal.

George Bucci’s goal in 1930 was in vain as Barking Town humbled Hampstead in the Amateur Cup 4-1, however it was back to winning ways in 1936 when Billy Breagan and a Fred Boston hat-trick saw Golders Green to a comfortable 4-0 London Senior Cup success at Leavesden.

In 1947 another trip to East London in the Amateur Cup ended in defeat as Ilford won 2-1, Roy Stroud’s strike a mere consolation but 11 years later in the Middlesex Senior Cup Twickenham were beaten 4-2 at Claremont Road thanks to a couple of goals from Miles Spector and one each from Tommy Lawrence and Roy Thomas.

As the Beatles entered the Billboard charts in the USA for the first time in 1964, Clapton were comfortably beaten 4-0 at Claremont Road in front of 940 fans with Tony Knox, David Hyde, Peter Dean and Peter Slade amongst the goals and five years later strikes from Rod Haider and Mickey Cannon knocked St Albans City out of the Amateur Cup at Clarence Park 2-0.

Moving into the semi-professional era, Bishop’s Stortford were beaten 2-1 in an FA Trophy tie in 1977, Tony Field and substitute Steve Jefferies scoring the goals and another FA Trophy tie seven years later against Weymouth away from home ended in a 3-2 win for the Greens, Dermot Drummy, Steve Hudson and Barry Henley seeing the Greens through.

Two years later a visit to Kingstonian brought with it rather less reward as the K’s unpicked the Greens back four and comfortably won 3-0 and then in 1997 another visit south of the river, this time to Sutton United was equally futile as the Ambers won 3-1, Jimmy Bolton with Hendon’s solitary strike.

2003 saw a visit to Ford United in the Ryman League and goals from Eugene Ofori, Ricci Crace and an own-goal secured a comfortable 3-1 win for Dave Anderson’s men, two years later a visit to Staines Town saw Gary Farrell’s side beaten once again, this time 2-0 to continue their alarming slide down the table.

Finally we turn to last season and the day upon which we remembered Dermot Drummy with Gosport Borough the visitors. A typically spectacular solo-strike from Shaun Lucien opened the scoring and was added to by Joe White before Matt Paterson’s header reduced the arrears. Lee Allinson’s men held on for a third consecutive league win and further pull away from the danger zone.

Of the 15 matches played so far on 18th January has seen exactly two-thirds won (10) and the remaining 5 lost. 36 goals have been scored and 23 conceded.
